Sunday Preview:

..

Jeff Purswell is preaching Sunday on “Don’t Waste Your Mind.” Jeff is a man who exemplifies using the mind to honor and serve God. Jeff’s keen theological understanding, impressive academic credentials and gift of teaching are all invested in training other men for pastoral ministry as he leads the Sovereign Grace Pastors College. On Sunday, Jeff will help us see what it is to love God “with all your mind.”

Judah Groveman and his band Zelos will be leading us in singing. We’re going to be “reaching into the vault” and singing a couple of songs we haven’t done in awhile, such as “Across the Great Divide” and “In My Heart” when we come together to worship God this Sunday.

Clash Update

..

Last week, many students from Covenant Life attended “The Clash,” a worldview camp Sovereign Grace Ministries does for college students. Pastor Greg Somerville attended as a counselor. I asked him for a brief report, and he writes:

“The Clash” was truly a mountaintop experience. Over 160 young people gathered at Messiah College in Grantham, PA for an intensive week of worldview studies. What an honor it was to learn about theology, philosophy, science, and current events from Jeff Purswell, D.A. Carson, Nathan Sasser and Ian Duguid—men known for their prodigious intellect and passionate faith. More significant to me, though, was the prodigious appetite these young people from Sovereign Grace churches across the country had for God!

Despite a grueling schedule and little sleep, these students engaged in deep discussion, wrestled with the implications of truth, initiated late-night times of worship and ministry, and forged deep friendships. Young men exemplified biblical leadership; young women exemplified biblical femininity. Everywhere you looked, God¹s grace was evident. I am humbled that God would allow me to experience “The Clash” with my three oldest children—and excited about the impact this conference will have for years to come!

Hearing Greg’s report, I am all the more looking forward to Jeff Purswell’s message this Sunday, “Don’t Waste Your Mind.” Jeff will be touching on some of the subjects shared at “The Clash.”

Clean Water!

..

In May and June, our singles ministry raised over $40,000 to provide clean water to Kibuara, Uganda, where our friend Moses pastors a church.  This gift was able to finance two wells in the town and one in a village where Moses just planted a new church. The remaining money will help with the church’s building project and buy them a small, portable sound system.

Construction on the wells began right away in partnership with Covenant Mercies, and we just received news that they are operational and the 3000 residents of Kibuara (almost 1/2 of whom are children) now have clean, sustainable drinking water. I’m grateful to God for the generosity of our singles!

Ambition: A Guide to Action

..

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”
—1 Peter 4:10

On Sunday, after Dave Harvey’s Message on godly ambition, we handed out “action guides,” listing areas of service in our church into which Covenant Life members can be channeling our ambitions and gifts, stewarding them well in the church and community.

The brochure explains: “Here, you’ll find dozens of ways you are needed in the church and community. The opportunities are color-coded according to various types of gifts and skills to help you quickly identify the ones that are most likely to suit you.”  So, if you didn’t get one on Sunday, you can download the below PDF and get to work.

Applying “Don’t Waste Your Ambition”

..

The art for this latest message of our series was created by Becca Hollandsworth.

J. Oswald Chambers said, “Ambition that centers on the glory of God and welfare of the church is a mighty force for good.” Yesterday, Dave Harvey taught us about godly ambition and seeking “the glory that comes from God” in a sermon called “Don’t Waste Your Ambition.” As one means of application, we handed out an “action guide” for channeling our ambition to serve God in our local church. If you didn’t get one, we will be posting it tomorrow.

You can download the message, or listen online here.

And, as you seek to apply the message, here are some questions, prepared by pastor Brian Chesemore, to consider either on your own or in a small group setting:

1.  In Dave’s introduction, he describes ambition as “a fundamental drive we all have.  We chase what we love. We are hunters who go after the things we value.”  Prior to hearing this message, what came into your mind when you heard the word ambition?  Was it largely negative?  Did you associate it with a Godward orientation?

2.  Like the Pharisees, I can so easily, “love the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.”  Where do you see the tendency to crave honor, to promote and protect your reputation?

3.  If loving the glory that comes from God connects the person of God’s glory: Jesus, with the summit of his glory: the Cross (v.28, 33), then a consistent and passionate pursuit of Christ is crucial.  To have rightly aimed ambitions, how can you give yourself to a deeper understanding of Calvary?

4.  The glory that comes from God demands a real pursuit. One way to pursue God’s glory is to take our passion for the glory of our name and re-direct it to him alone. What regular opportunities do you have for self-promotion? How can you turn them into “glory moments” with God at the center?

5.  Since our ambitions should follow Christ’s ambition to build his Church, where would you like to put your godly ambition to work for the sake of your local church?

A Letter of Encouragement

..

Shortly after the Rebelution conference, I received a letter from a pastor in Michigan who had brought several teenagers from his church to attend the conference. His letter was full of encouragement, but I was most affected by his gratefulness for the hospitality he received from members of our church. Here is an excerpt:

I just had a wonderful weekend at your church and I wanted to share some of my joy with you….On Saturday we awoke and made our way to Covenant Life Church for The Rebelution. We were welcomed by friendly young people that were helpful and the kids and I were blown away by them….[On Sunday] we awoke and packed up and pulled into Covenant Life Church for the 9:00 AM service. Again, we were warmly greeted. As I filed the students into the sanctuary and got them seated a very nice lady approached us. Her name was Karen Duberstein. I talked with her about 5 minutes and ended up being invited to visit with her and her husband if my family ever comes through. This is what I love to see as a pastor. Members of the church working as part of the body of Christ. Ultimately, I am writing this email to encourage you and your pastoral staff…I will continue to pray for your church family. Thank you for joyfully serving me and my students as we visited. We felt very much at home.

I hope this letter inspires you to see the opportunity we have every Sunday to welcome guests. Let’s seize this opportunity tomorrow!
