Writing and J.I. Packer on Scripture
1 Comments..
Yesterday I spent the day at the Worthy 08 Youth Retreat and had a great time. What incredible, godly, fun high school students we have in this church! Dave Brewer and his team are doing such a good job leading families with teens.
I’m continuing to plug away at my book writing project. I’d appreciate your prayers. This week I’m working on a chapter on God’s word. I came across this quote from J.I. Packer’s book Concise Theology and share it here for your encouragement:
What Scripture says, God says; for, in a manner comparable only to the deeper mystery of the Incarnation, the Bible is both fully human and fully divine. So all its manifold contents—histories, prophecies, poems, songs, wisdom writings, sermons, statistics, letters, and whatever else—should be received as from God, and all that Bible writers teach should be revered as God’s authoritative instruction. Christians should be grateful to God for the gift of his written Word, and conscientious in basing their faith and life entirely and exclusively upon it. Otherwise, we cannot ever honor or please him as he calls us to do.
Amen! Let’s base our lives “entirely and exclusively” on God’s authoritative instruction given to us in Scripture.

Praying for the Youth Retreat
1 Comments..
Yesterday youth, parents, and pastors left for Worthy ‘08, our Senior High Youth Retreat. Pastor Dave Brewer is leading the retreat, and posted these prayer requests:
- Pray that God would bless the preaching of His Word. Pray for the speakers: Josh, Eric, CJ, & Kenneth.
- Pray that God would save lost souls. Pray that God would use this time away to reveal Himself to teens and to save them.
- Pray for teens who are already Christians, that God would continue to reveal Himself in greater ways.
- Pray that the Savior would be glorified and honored in all we do.

Applying “Don’t Waste Your Mind”

The art for “Don’t Waste Your Mind” was created by Zak Parsons.
Yesterday Jeff Purswell taught us on what it is to “love the Lord your God…with all your mind.”
You can download the message or listen online here.
As you seek to apply the message, here are some questions, prepared by pastor Brian Chesemore, to consider either on your own or in a small group setting:
1. In Jeff’s message, “Don’t Waste Your Mind,” he makes clear how Paul, armed with the gospel, preaches to tear down vain human reasonings that oppose the truth of God. The gospel engages in spiritual warfare as it sets captives free from the thinking that keeps them in their sin. What wrong ideas did you formerly embrace until they were destroyed by the gospel upon your conversion?
2. In his 1st point, “The Importance of Thinking”, Jeff took us to Gen. 1:26-28 to show how mankind alone is patterned after the image of God. Therefore, as men and women, we wake each morning able to think! How can you honor God by giving thought to the call he’s placed on you? Whether a homemaker or student or out in the workforce, in what ways has God positioned you to regularly consider how to care for his creation, subdue it, improve life, and make this earth more productive?
3. Jeff listed three ways we hinder thinking: we discourage it because of poor past experience or fear of pride, we secularize it by keeping it off the list of what is sacred to God (like our devotions, and singing, and serving), and we avoid thinking because of the effort it requires. Where do you see these errors hindering your thinking?
4. Read Mark 12:28-31. In light of this passage and its foundation in Deut. 6:4-5, loving God means we give constant attention to his word. How are you currently pursuing God’s Word? What would need to change in order for your mind to be characterized as one “immersed in Scripture”?
5. Because of God’s infinite knowledge and His revelation of certain knowledge, we can know truly those things he has revealed. How can you seize this season to develop your mind and enlarge your soul by pursuing learning for God’s Glory? What books, conversations, and tasks, should you engage in to enlarge your thoughts and better reflect his image in your thinking?
6. How are you embracing and transmitting the knowledge and glory of the gospel to a younger generation?
