Gathering to Pray This Sunday Night

..

I know this is very late notice, but we’ve decided to hold a prayer meeting this Sunday night, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Events Center.

The purpose of this prayer meeting is very simple: we’re to pray for God to use our upcoming Christmas Eve services to open people’s hearts to the gospel.

Here’s how this came up:

I got a call this morning from a dear member of our church who had been praying and asking God to save those who don’t know Christ. As she prayed she was overwhelmed with an awareness of the hardness of heart among unbelieving people and a hardness in her own heart and among Christians for the plight of the lost. She was weeping as she spoke. “I think we need to gather and pray,” she said. “I believe we should pray for God to give us his heart for the lost and to use the Christmas Eve services to spread the gospel.” As soon as she shared the idea, I felt a sense of excitement to do just that.

I thought of Cathy Mays who is directing the production and had a burden to pray for her and the whole team that’s putting this together (a team of 150 volunteers is involved: choir, cast, orchestra, costumes, sound, lights, ushers…). I also thought of the unbelieving men and women who will attend and the many other opportunities the Christmas season offers for us to reach out as a Christian community. This will be a great time to ask God to use us and these services to glorify Jesus Christ.

Because it’s such short notice, I don’t expect that a lot of people will be able to come, and I don’t want anyone to feel bad if they can’t. But if you are able to be there, please join us to pray.

A couple changes to our previous post:

First of all, because of some sickness going around at the retirement community, Gen2Gen’s trip to Asbury Methodist Village scheduled for this Saturday had been postponed until January.

Also, sorry to say, we posted the wrong link in the last post. To find out more about Gen2Gen, the ministry Ellie Berry has started, click here.

If you’re interested in participating on their next trip, or for more information, you can

Ultimate Man

Last Sunday in his message, Jeff Purswell told the story of dressing as a super hero for his young son’s birthday party. We had fun with this video clip from his illustration. If you watch this and have no idea what the context is, check out Jeff’s sermon, The Glory of the Incarnation.

Today in the Pastors Meeting

..

Every Wednesday we meet as pastors to pray and talk about various aspects of the church. Today we had a discussion inspired by a chapter in Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers about how we can better train and equip the next generation of church members. We took time to ask God to help us disciple students so that they surpass us in godliness and effectiveness in building the church and spreading the gospel.

In 2 Timothy 3:14-17 Paul says to Timothy:

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

Let’s be praying that God would raise up a new generation in our church populated with godly young men and women who, like Timothy, know God’s word and live their lives by it.

The Glory of the Incarnation: Application

..

Yesterday Jeff Purswell preached an outstanding message on the glory of Christ’s incarnation. In the incarnation, Jeff taught, God became man, his glory was revealed and his grace was provided.

You can listen online or download the message here.

And here are the questions pastor Brian Chesemore has written to help you apply this message to your life either on your own or in groups. At the bottom, for your further study, Brian lists many of the texts Jeff referenced in his message.

1.  In what specific ways does John 1:1-18 reveal both the divinity and humanity of Christ?

2.  In the incarnation, Jesus took on humanity in such a way that he could identify and sympathize with every temptation and challenge you face.  How should this encourage you in your current circumstances?  How should this affect your thoughts of God and prayers to him?

3.  John 1:14 reminds us that God loves to disclose himself and his glory.  How do you see the glory of God revealed in the life, death, and resurrection of Christ?

4.  Josh encouraged us to meditate on the Old Testament and New Testament passages in Jeff’s message so that we might appreciate the incarnation all the more. The passages are listed below.  May God bless your study of his Word!

    a. In Exodus we encounter the glory of God manifested in the midst of his people (Ex 24:17; 25:8; 33:18; 34: 5-7; Ex 40).

    b. Meditate on the steadfast love and faithfulness spoken of in the Old Testament and manifested in the grace and truth of Jesus Christ (Psalm 25:10; 36:6; 57:3; John 1:14-18).
