Sunday Preview: The Incarnation

We are taking a break from our Ephesians Series and starting a brief series on the incarnation for the month of December. This Sunday, Jeff Purswell will preach from John 1:14-18 on “The Glory of the Incarnation.”
Devon Kauflin will lead our time of singing, and we’ll start memorizing our next hymn, “Before the Throne.”

Gen2Gen

I am excited to highlight a ministry called Generation to Generation or “Gen2Gen,” started by Ellie Berry, a teen in our church. She was inspired by “Do Hard Things” and she wants to recruit more teens and parents to participate. I want to encourage others to join her, but also to consider how they can create new ways to serve and care for people in need.
Ellie says on the Gen2Gen site: “I came up with the idea for Gen2Gen after my choir sang at the Asbury Methodist Village near my house. I also read the book Do Hard Things by Alex and Brett Harris. I wanted to do “hard things” and serve the residents at Asbury, so I put the two things together. I came up with gen2gen, a ministry that spans different generations. I hope that this ministry will serve both the older generation and the youth.”
We asked a couple young ladies to share about their experience with Gen2Gen:
There were a couple of reasons I signed up to serve with Gen2Gen. Most of all, it looked like a fun way to step outside my comfort zone; serving with some girls I didn’t know very well in an environment I’m not really familiar with. I was looking forward to getting to know the other volunteers better, and we were certainly drawn closer by serving together! We also, of course, got to interact with the residents at Asbury. This ministry was a rewarding way for me to become more comfortable interacting with people in a very different season of life than I am in. It was a blessing to be able to serve them in whatever way we could, even if it was just escorting them to a small concert (put on by a local high-school group) and back. It was just a little thing, but for many it was the highlight of their day! Overall, it was a very rewarding and eye-opening experience, and I can’t wait to go back! I was so blessed by my time there, and I hope every high-schooler would consider participating!
—Allison BranchawI am usually characterized as an introverted person, so it would seem that I would not be too keen on volunteering at Asbury. However, I put away my fears and God convicted me to step out of my comfort zone. Serving at Asbury allowed me to experience the joy of serving others and how much it meant to the residents. They expressed their gratefulness time and time again, and I am glad I had such an opportunity.

Ephesians, Part 12: Application

Today Isaac Hydoski preached from Ephesians 4:14-16 that “God wants us to grow up into Christ by speaking the truth in love, by depending on Christ and each other, and by working and building together.”

1. As a local church, we grow into maturity in Christ by speaking the truth in love to one another. What does it mean to speak in such a manner?
2. Grace to grow into Christ-like maturity comes largely through the care we receive from others. How have you recently experienced God’s care through the local church?
3. In what specific ways can we work and build together toward maturity in Christ?
4. Isaac exhorted us to work toward maturity through prayer. What are specific prayers you can lift up for your own personal growth as well as our church’s growth?
