Welcoming Guests in Jesus’ Name

..

Here’s a snapshot of Justi and Jordan Thomas taken at a recent Guest Reception in the Spurgeon Room. They have both served with the Guest Reception team for the last four years, and Jordan has led the team for the past year. Justi says: “We are humbled to be a guest’s first encounter with a member of Covenant Life. We consider it an honor to serve God by extending hospitality to those who are visiting our church, and our desire is for guests to experience a taste of God’s love and care.”

Jordan and Justi, and all those who serve on the Guest Reception team, thank you for representing our church and the love of Christ by showing hospitality to those God brings through our doors each Sunday.

For this coming Sunday, Robin Boisvert will be preaching our third and final message in the Incarnation series, from John 1:1: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”  Bob Kauflin will lead our time of singing. I’m looking forward to singing great Christmas songs like “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “Glory Be to God on High,” “Emmanuel” and “What Child is This?”—as well as the hymn we’re memorizing as a church, “Before the Throne.”

Christmas Caroling This Sunday

..

This past Sunday we talked about ways we can be investing in relationships with unbelievers and reaching out to our community during the Christmas season. One opportunity I mentioned was Mike and Sarah Thompson’s plan for Christmas caroling this Sunday afternoon.

Here’s the scoop: Thaw out your vocal chords, and meet in the main lobby of the church at 4:30 p.m. this Sunday. Mike and Sarah will help organize groups of carolers and assign them to different neighborhoods, both to sing and hand out invitations for our Christmas Eve services. Song sheets, instructions, and maps will be provided.

Please consider if you and your family could participate in this free and fun way to reach out to our community.

Singles Serve Up a Happy Thanksgiving

..

I want to let the church know about an outreach that the Singles did over Thanksgiving. What happened with this outreach excites me about future efforts to reach our community with the gospel. I’ve asked Drew Garfield to share specifics of this project:

It all started with a member of our church, Dennis Castaneda, and his passion to bless those both in and outside the church who are in need and would be helped by a Thanksgiving meal. Nothing would have happened if Dennis hadn’t approached Mark Mitchell about Covenant Life getting involved in what he and others have already been doing for a couple of years. What is really exciting is that, by getting the church involved, we were able to expand from the five families Dennis helped last year to blessing 30 families this year!

After Dennis approached us we started work on the logistics. I began gathering names from the pastors, Dennis and several school counselors at area public schools. Members of the singles ministry donated nearly $1800 to purchase food, and then at the November Big Meeting the singles pastors took their respective spheres to three local Giant supermarkets to do the shopping for the meals. The next day more singles came out to help prepare and deliver the baskets.

It was particularly rewarding to be able to work with the different school counselors; they were so grateful for our help. One counselor told me that one of the mothers began to cry when she heard that we would be providing a meal for her and her children. Others who were served included a mom and her kids who were planning to eat pizza for their Thanksgiving meal, a family whose home is without heat or electricity and a single mom who recently lost her job.

It was great being able to show kindness toward people in real need. It was also exciting to see the joyful and willing help of the singles in our church; there is something really amazing about seeing a group of people come together to help someone else.

I’m grateful for Drew’s leadership that made this event possible. Dennis, I want to commend your heart to see the members of our church expressing love and care for the needy in our community. Thanks for your initiative!

The Staff Christmas Party in Pictures

..

The annual Christmas party for the church staff was this past Thursday evening, and what a great time!  Our resident Game King, Erik Sheffer, put together four games that kept the 12 tables of staff, pastors and their spouses busy competing in teams and laughing A LOT.

Visit this link for a brief slideshow of photos from the party. The brief descriptions with each photo tell the story. (To make the descriptions visible, look for the little “Show Info” link at the slideshow’s upper right corner.) Enjoy!

Made Like His Brothers: Application

..

Yesterday, Don DeVries preached the second message of our series on the Incarnation. From Hebrews 2:14-18, Don showed us that “Christ’s humanity enabled him to fulfill God’s saving purposes and to meet man’s ultimate need.”

You can listen online or download the message here.

Application questions:

1.  Don’s main point from Hebrews 2:10-18 is that Christ’s humanity enabled Him to fulfill God’s saving purposes and to meet man’s ultimate need.  Why is salvation impossible without the incarnation?

2.  Death is a reality for all of humanity, yet so many in our culture try to avoid any thought of death, or they process it in superficial ways. How does the knowledge that Christ came and died for our sins truly free us from the fear of death?

3.  Why is the word “propitiation” so significant for Christians?  How did Christ’s humanity make it possible for him to take God’s wrath from us?

4.  Because of Christ’s humanity and death, the way is opened for us to receive ongoing help.  In what ways are you facing temptations and challenges right now where you need the help of Christ?

Cold Can’t Stop This Crew

Last Sunday, the parking greeters braved the windy 30-degree weather to serve us. Above is Roma Mayo, who has been serving for four years. His dad, Dave, is the Parking Team Leader.  This team is a great example of sacrificial service that makes a real difference in everyone’s ability to benefit from our Sunday meetings. Thanks to Roma, Dave and the whole team!

Tomorrow is the second message of our series on the incarnation. Don DeVries will be preaching from Hebrews 2:14-18, and Mike Bradshaw will lead our time of singing. We will also receive the Lord’s Supper together.
