Tomorrow: Back to Ephesians

..

Above: Dave Wilcox, Erin Jones and Bram Lillard consult after the first service last Sunday. Dave is Covenant Life’s Technical Director. He leads a small army of servants who make live video and sound happen throughout the building on Sundays. Bram serves as Assistant Technical Director on first and third Sundays. Erin is assistant to pastor Grant Layman. On Sundays you’ll see her hanging out near the sound booth helping to oversee the flow of the meeting.

A busy day tomorrow! We return to our Ephesians series, and I’ll be preaching from Ephesians 4:17-24. Devon Kauflin will lead singing. We’ll also receive the Lord’s Supper together and dedicate 30+ children to God’s glory.

They’re Back, Tired and Grateful

Report from Isaac Hydoski on behalf of the Uganda team (they arrived safely at Washington Dulles on Thursday afternoon):

We’re back…tired, but real happy.  Another amazing trip marked by God’s grace and power on display through the gospel.  Drew and I had the privilege of serving with a team that simply rocked what a trip like this is all about: tireless, passionate preaching of the gospel.  From top to bottom every member of this team contributed in really significant ways and there were quite a few surprises of people serving in powerful, effective ways.  Very neat.

Some brief highlights for you to enjoy:

• The effect of the wells on the community has been profound.  Mortality rates are down significantly, and the overall health of the community has seen great improvements.  What a joy to see children drinking clean, cool water!
• The church in Kiburara has grown significantly since our last visit.  From about 100 members to 150.
• Pastor Moses has planted two new churches in area villages since our last visit.  One village apparently saw many conversions during/after our outreach there, and there is now a fledgling church of about 20 there!
• It was a great joy to witness many people who were saved last year during our evangelism outreaches worshipping with us this year at the youth conference and the church.
• After Drew and I gave the money from Covenant Life to Kiburara Gospel Centre for their building program, Godfrey, Moses’ assistant, said to us: “We thank you for this gift; we are a small village, and we know Jesus has remembered us through you.”  I was undone by this…
• The most significant highlight for me was watching our own Drew Garfield leading this team with wisdom, skill, faith and passion.  He simply did an outstanding job.  It was a joy to watch how easily the team followed his leadership and how well he cared for them.  We have a gift in this guy.

We are really grateful for all your prayers lifted up on our behalf. We felt the Lord’s grace and help every day.

—Isaac

Thinking Ahead about Helping the Homeless

..

Here’s an inspiring e-mail I received from B.J. Thomas (the Covenant Life member, not the singer of “Rain Drops Keep Fallin’ On My Head”):

Hi Joshua,

Thank you for serving us so well in the two-part series about “The Good Recession.”  Your message today inspired me to see what other ways I can help the poor and needy in our midst.

I wanted to share something my daughter and I created and have been passing out the past seven years to help the homeless.

Driving around Montgomery County, I frequently came to an intersection where a homeless person was standing with a sign. Wanting to help, we started collecting toiletries (travel-size toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, combs, etc.) bottled water, individually wrapped packages of cookies and crackers, tracts, the gospel of John and a print out of all the homeless shelters and soup kitchens in Montgomery County (found at www.dhr.state.md.us). We put all the items in a gallon sized zip lock bag along with two one-dollar bills.

We keep them in the front seat of our car, and now when we drive up to an intersection and someone approaches, we joyfully roll down our window and hand them a packet. As we drive away, we pray for that person and ask God to protect and provide for them. The packets can be made fairly inexpensively and have allowed us to help in a small way those who we might not otherwise have the opportunity to serve.

Our hope is that others can find creative ways to serve the needy in our community.

Hymns: Good for the Soul

Bob Kauflin passed on this encouraging e-mail to me:

Dear Bob,

I am so grateful you have asked us to memorize these hymns!  As I learn and sing, I have found myself rejoicing at a deeper level.

Also, I am so much more aware of God’s love for me, an area in which I have needed to grow. Guess what? I must confess…I didn’t even like hymns before we started memorizing them! Isn’t God good?

With abundant thanksgiving,

—Elizabeth Stanford

Thanks for the encouragement, Elizabeth! Thanks also to Ken Boer for his hard work on the “Hymns: How Sweet the Sound” series and to Dave Campbell and Roger Hooper for producing the CD. Your work is helping us all grow in love for God!

Uganda Team Update #11

..

Word from Kelly H. Probably the final update…

Isaac called about 1 a.m. our time to let us know the team was about to board the flight from Entebbe to London.  He may not be able to call again before they reach home due to the short layover between their flights.  If they miss their connection, he will definitely call to let us know.  Please pray for safe and timely travel; they are excited to be coming home!

By the way, Isaac said the team thoroughly enjoyed the “boutique hotel” that they ended up in after the first hotel gave away their rooms. It was a smaller hotel with beautiful verandas.  In fact, they preferred their new hotel so much, Isaac thinks they will most likely use it for future trips. God often blesses us in such unexpected ways, doesn’t He?

It’s been a privilege to provide these updates and pray with all of you.  God Bless!

Uganda Team Update #10

..

Quick report about Tuesday (pictured: a view of Burton Street in Kampala City Centre):

The team has safely arrived in Kampala, but not without a little adventure!

When the team reached their hotel—tired, hungry and looking forward to a hot shower and comfortable bed—they found out their reservations had been given away to another group that had missed their flight earlier. Oops! The hotel managers have worked hard to make amends by providing a complimentary dinner for the team and booking new accommodations for them at another hotel in Kampala. They are also providing shuttle transport and breakfast for the team at their new hotel.

They will be leaving to catch their flight in about 12 hours or so. Isaac will call when they reach the airport. Please be praying for safe travel.

Grace to you all…

—Kelly H.
