Seminar for Parents of Children with Special Needs
0 Comments..

Joe Lee sent me another item I want to highlight for you. Here’s his description of an upcoming seminar:
There are over 45,000 children in the D.C. metro area who have special needs, and the number is growing every day. A child with a special need is someone who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. These activities include but are not limited to walking, seeing, learning, working, performing manual tasks, speaking and hearing.
There are many children in Covenant Life Church who have special needs and thus are not able to fully participate in the life of the church. This applies to their families who care for them as well.
We’ve planned a seminar to provide encouragement for parents of children with special needs. These parents can often feel alone in their trials. We want to use this meeting to encourage and remind them that they are not alone as they faithfully care for their children—that God is with them—and we as a church are with them.
We also hope this gathering will help the parents connect with others who have similar trials and thus become a means of encouragement and a resource to one another.
The seminar is on Saturday, February 28, in the Edwards Room from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Gary Ricucci will lead a time of prayer and ministry for the families. We would love to see as many members as possible attend to express their love and pray for these parents.
Proverbs 18:14: “A man’s spirit will endure sickness, ?but a crushed spirit who can bear?”

When You Have Angry Words…
1 Comments..
During his sermon this past Sunday, Mike Bradshaw showed a home video clip of his daughter, Caly, reciting how she has been trained to respond when she is tempted to use angry words. The response her dad and mom have taught her goes like this:
Cover your mouth.
Be quiet, and be still.
Take your hands down, and use respectful words like, “Please, may I have it?”
A pretty helpful picture, isn’t it? So, how do you put off angry words?

Wise Words from Paul Tripp
0 Comments..
In his message on the power of words (see Eph. 4:29) this past Sunday, Mike Bradshaw quoted two excellent passages from Paul Tripp’s book, War of Words. Since I can never seem to write fast enough to get them down, I thought I’d post them here for anyone who missed them:
“Talk seems so normal, so ordinary, so unimportant, so harmless. Yet there are few things we do that are more important. Words are powerful, important, significant. It was meant to be that way. When we speak, it must be with the realization that God has given our words significance. He has ordained for them to be important. Words were significant at Creation and at the Fall. They are significant to redemption. God has given words value. So we must do all we can to assign words the importance Scripture gives them.”
“If my heart is the source of my sin problem, then lasting change must always travel through the pathway of my heart. It is not enough to alter my behavior or to change my circumstances. Christ transforms people by radically changing their hearts.”

Ephesians, Part 16: Application
2 Comments..

Yesterday Mike Bradshaw taught us about our use of words. “Our words,” he said, “carry the dangerous potential to corrupt or the glorious potential to give grace.”
You can listen online or download the message here.
Application questions:
1. Mike reminded us of Proverbs 18:21: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” How would you evaluate the way you use words? Do they build up or corrupt? How would others evaluate your communication?
2. Mike taught us that corrupt words reveal a corrupt heart, for “out of the abundance of [the] heart the mouth speaks.” (Luke 6:45). What one “corrupt” area of your heart is the Holy Spirit highlighting for change so your speech will also change?
3. Mike shared with us that our words—when carefully chosen to edify and when appropriate to the individual and to the occasion—have potential to give grace to those who hear. Who can you go to today and impart grace with your words? What specific steps can you take to make this a godly pattern in your life?
4. For further work on our words, Mike encouraged the following ways to apply this message:
a. Memorize Ephesians 4:29
b. Read Proverbs, especially chapters 17-19
c. Read Paul Tripp’s book, War of Words

Worshiping Together Tomorrow
0 Comments..
Wasn’t today beautiful? I am looking forward to another nice day and being with everyone tomorrow.
We will be taking communion together and continuing to learn this month’s hymn, “Be Thou My Vision.” Also, as I mentioned yesterday, Dean Ademak, a friend of our church and leader of the Rancho 3M orphanage in Guadalupe, Mexico, is visiting our church. He will share a brief testimony in both services.
Finally, Mike Bradshaw will be preaching from Ephesians 4:29 on “the gospel and our words.”
See you tomorrow!
