Ephesians, Part 20: Application

..

Brian Chesemore preached on marriage, skillfully unpacking Ephesians 5:22-33 and exhorting us in the ultimate purpose of godly marriages: the display of the glory of Christ.

You can listen online, or download the message here.

Application questions:

1. God displays the glory of Christ in marriages shaped by his design.  Where are you encouraged by your spouse’s obedience to God’s design of sacrificial love or respectful submission?

2. Ephesians 5:22-24 calls wives to submit to her husband as the church submits to Christ.  Wives, is there an area where your husband is seeking to lead but your heart does not have a submissive posture?  Where is God calling you to actively support and esteem his leadership and express your respect for him?

3. According to Ephesians 5:25, husbands are to love their wives sacrificially, like Christ loved his church.  Husbands, is your love for your wife marked by a willingness to lay down your rights, your agenda and your preferences in order to love your wife?  What is God calling you to do on your wife’s behalf that is going to cost you something?

4. As Christ nourished and cherished his bride, the church (Eph. 5:29), husbands where can you grow in nourishing and cherishing your wife, in serving and blessing her, and in caring for her physical and spiritual health?

5. Brian encouraged husbands and wives to apply this message by asking for their spouse’s evaluation:

Husbands, ask your wives:
  a.  If you knew that I would not become angry, how would you honesty evaluate my leadership of you and the children?
  b.  What is one way I can serve you more effectively?
  c.  What is one way I can serve the children more effectively?

Wives, ask your husbands:
  a.  If you knew that I would not become angry, how would you honestly evaluate my submission and willingness of follow your leadership?
  b.  What is one way I can grow in following you?

Starting Point Recycles

..

Here’s a word from Kevin Rogers who serves the church by coordinating ministry teams, Starting Point and much more:

The Starting Point class is just that, a starting point. People who are looking for a church and have questions about Covenant Life are welcome to come and discover what we’re all about. The class is made up of several small groups led by pastors where you can get to know other people in a similar place in life while you enjoy coffee and light brunch fare. After a brief teaching from one of the pastors, you can ask questions and discuss what you’ve heard in a friendly setting.

There are nine different lessons, and you are invited to join us at any point.  Every nine weeks Starting Point comes back to Lesson 1, which gives us an ideal opportunity to take a glance back at what’s happened and encourage some of you to give the next round a try.  Here are just a few highlights from the last session:

• This class has had the most first-timers ever!  We had 65 people come for the first time for Lesson 1, with over 140 different people attending throughout the cycle.
• Over 30 high school seniors began the class.  Most of these students’ parents are members of Covenant Life, and they are now pursuing church membership for themselves.
• One young lady first found out about Covenant Life when she attended our ESL (English as a Second Language) course three years ago. She had just arrived from Korea and knew very little English. Two years later she came back with a co-worker to attend our Alpha program where they both heard the gospel and were gloriously saved. This month, they both completed Starting Point, became members of Covenant Life and got married!

If you’re not a member of a church or have been attending Covenant Life but have gotten involved, why not give it a try?  We can’t promise you’ll find a spouse or improve your English…but you never know.  We meet in the Pastor’s College classroom on the lower level of the building at 11:30 a.m. every Sunday. We’d love to see you there this week. If you want to know more about what it’s like and hear a few more stories, check out the brief video here.

..

I posted about this on my personal website, but couldn’t resist repeating it here. I recently discovered that there’s a free preview of the ESV Online Study Bible available for the month of March. I encourage you to check it out for yourself.

If you own a copy of the Study Bible, you can use the registration code (included with every print edition of the ESV Study Bible) and retain access to the Online Study Bible after the free preview expires. Pretty cool!

Some of the features of this online Bible:

1. It’s the full ESV Bible with all the Study Notes, maps and articles.

2. You can highlight sections on the screen and even make your own notes next to passages.

3. You can listen to any portion of the Bible as it is read to you. The reading is a high-quality recording by David Cochran Heath, a veteran stage actor.

Crossway, the Bible’s publisher, is doing an amazing job. This is a fabulous resource and another great reason to get an ESV Study Bible.

Want To Serve at Next?

..

Since the beginning, the Next conference (formerly “New Attitude”) has relied on many wonderful volunteers who serve as ushers, security, bookstore workers, set up crew, and in many other roles. We are so grateful. And we need you again this year!

I’m really excited about some new ways people can serve this year:

Intercessory Prayer Team – We are seeking prayer warriors who would be willing to commit to praying before, during and after the conference. Tim Kerr, pastor of Sovereign Grace Church Toronto, will provide weekly e-mail bulletins to guide the team in prayer. For those who have the time and money to be at the conference, Tim will be leading an intercessory prayer team on site, while sending updates to those remaining at home.

Ministry Team – I would like to have a team at the conference to pray with attendees at the end of each session. Perhaps you’re a couple who has been in the church for several years, and it would excite you to serve the next generation in this way. We would love to see you participate in the conference. If you’re interested in this team, see below to apply.

Security Team – We’d like to recruit some men with law enforcement background; but regardless of background, we are looking for a team of mature men who can serve at the conference by caring for and escorting attendees, serving speakers, etc.

To apply for any of these teams, .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). As with all full-time volunteers, servants on these teams will receive complimentary registration, but need to cover all their own expenses (travel, lodging, meals). Without this kind of sacrifice and servanthood, Next could not happen. Thank you!

Ready When the First Note Sounds

..

I was struck by Bob Kauflin’s exhortation to us this Sunday about anticipating our Sunday meetings with faith and making sure that we’re on time for the singing. For those who were absent Sunday, and as another gentle nudge for those of us who were present, here again are Bob’s words (the context was Ephesians 5:18-19):

How do you view our singing on Sunday morning? How eagerly do you look forward to it? How much effort do you give to making sure that you’re here when the first note sounds?

Now, I know this is a bad time to bring this up when the clocks change, so we’ll exempt this morning, but let’s think of every other Sunday.

I want to encourage you to consider what you can do to be in your seat five minutes before the meeting starts. Not so that we can all congratulate ourselves: Boy, aren’t we a prompt church! Aren’t we on time! [No], what we would do is prepare our hearts for the Spirit to fill this room and do his work in us through song as we are singing to one another.

Never underestimate what the Spirit might do through you and what he wants to do to you as a result of our singing together. I think of going to a concert where there’s a front set that you really don’t care about; you just show up for the person you really want to go to.

[But] this isn’t a concert. This is the people of God gathering to declare his praise to remember the covenant that he has made with us through Jesus Christ, and to glory in him. Let’s not miss a moment of it!

Ephesians, Part 19: Application

..

Bob Kauflin taught us well yesterday with his message on being “wise, Spirit-filled Christians.”  Preaching from Ephesians 5:15-21, he exhorted us to sing to others and to the Lord, to give thanks with others through the Lord, and to submit to others because of the Lord.

You can listen online or download the message here.

Application questions:

1. Ephesians 5:19 teaches us that Spirit-filled singing is “to the Lord,” “with all your heart” and to “one another.” Is this how you view singing with other Christians?  Do you come to Sunday mornings expectant, not wanting to miss a moment of Spirit-filled singing to others and to the Lord? If not, how can you begin to cultivate that attitude?

2. Ephesians 5:20 exhorts Spirit-filled believers to “[give] thanks always and for everything.” We are called to regularly give thanks to God that his sovereign hand controls all our circumstances and situations. Does this kind of thanksgiving characterize your life?  Where can you grow in gratefulness to God?

3. Ephesians 5:21 calls wise, Spirit-filled Christians to submit to those whom God has placed in authority over us. Are you humbly submitted to those God has placed in your life?  If not, in what ways do you need to repent and begin to obey God’s word?
