Prayer for the Nations: Germany

..

This is one of the Sovereign Grace Mission videos that we viewed as a church last October. It deals with ministry in Germany, and since we took time to pray for Germany in church this past Sunday, I wanted to post it here for everyone to view again. I’ve included a sketch of the points we covered as we prayed for the German people, along with suggestions on how to continue in prayer. —Josh

Germany is home to over 82 million people. Despite the devastating effects of being at center stage during two World Wars, Germany has rebounded and is once again one of Europe’s wealthiest and most powerful nations.

For 45 years after World War II the country was divided, with East Germany under harsh Communist rule. The “Iron Curtain,” a concrete wall that literally split the country in two, came down in 1990, reuniting the nation.

Sadly, Germany is a spiritually impoverished nation, where only 45% of the people believe there is a God, and fewer than 10% attend church. Moreover, the Christian community that exists is aging; more than half of the Christians are over 50.

As the birthplace of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation, the nation of Germany has a rich spiritual heritage. Through Sovereign Grace Ministries, Covenant Life Church has a connection to what God is doing in Germany today.

One of the Sovereign Grace Mission videos [see above] we viewed as a church last October included an interview with Wolfgang Wegert and his son, Christian, of Arche (Ark) Church in Hamburg, Germany. Christian was a student in last year’s Pastors College class, and his dad has been faithfully leading Arche Church for more than three decades. Wolfgang will be preaching here on Palm Sunday, April 5, and telling us more about what God is doing in his country. We are so excited about the work and witness of this church and our growing friendship.

Please pray…

• For spiritual rebuilding in Germany—a new “reformation”—especially among youth
• That the people of this prosperous nation would see their need for the Savior; that they would hear and respond to the truth of the gospel
• The Wegert family, Arche Church and other like-minded churches— that God would strengthen their ministries and use them to build the church and bring many to Christ

The Call to Servanthood: Application

..

Yesterday Chris Silard brought a wonderful and convicting message from Philippians 2:1-8, teaching that “The life of Christ in us should produce humble servanthood among us.”

You can listen online or download the message here.

Application Questions:

1. What are some ways that you see humble servanthood in your family, in your care group and in the church?  Make a point this week to encourage these people with what you see.

2. According to Phil. 2:3, one hindrance to humble servanthood is “rivalry or conceit,” which Chris described as pursuing our own interests at the expense of others.  Where do you see this self-promoting pride in your life?  What can you do specifically to repent of pride and cultivate humility?

3. Phil. 2:4 lists another hindrance to humble servanthood: “me only,” in which we live so focused on our own busy lives that we are unaware of the needs of others.  Has this been a hindrance to humble servanthood in your life?  What specific things can you do to “look…to the interests of others”?

4. In Phil. 2:5-8, Paul teaches that the co-eternal, co-equal Son of God veiled His glory in ordinary human weakness and embraced the Cross.  What specific steps can you take to emulate Jesus’ humility and grow in humble servanthood in your home, in the church and among unbelievers around you?

Tomorrow’s Meeting

..

I’m so excited that Chris Silard will be bringing God’s word to us tomorrow. Chris is senior pastor of Sovereign Grace Church of Frederick, which he, along with a team of families from Covenant Life, planted in the summer of 2006. Chris served as a pastor here at Covenant Life for 10 years.

Bob Kauflin will lead us in singing, and we will be taking time to pray for the nation of Germany.

Also, as I mentioned last Sunday, we’ll be praying 10 minutes before each meeting down front. We’ll have a few groups led by pastors praying. Feel free to join us.

See you tomorrow.

What Happens With the Pastors Gone

I am still away with the rest of the pastors, but when I checked my e-mail last night, I got an interesting report from the secretaries who are “holding down the fort” in our absence. The ladies had sent these photos below and more documenting their relocation of the church office to the building’s roof. What better way to enjoy a beautiful afternoon while the pastors are away. The message seems to be that life is pretty good with us out of the picture!

Uganda Mission Trip

..

Drew Garfield sent me word about plans for the next Uganda Mission trip:

For the last two years we have partnered with a church in rural western Uganda to help with their annual youth conference. We’re involved in nightly “crusades” where our team contributes by preaching, giving testimonies, doing skits, and leading singing and small group discussions. We have also gone door to door to pray and share the gospel and ministered in a local prison.

These missions trips offer an extraordinary opportunity to invest in gospel ministry. While the two trips to date have included only singles, the 2010 trip is open to all church members, including 16-18 year olds if accompanied by a parent.

We are looking for individuals who have a passion to see the gospel taken throughout the world and vision for partnering in the work of the gospel with our brothers and sisters in East Africa. Team members will be chosen through an interview process that takes into account a variety of factors.

Please pray and consider applying. The tentative trip dates are January 1-13, 2010. Each person on the team provides his or her own support. The projected cost is $2,700 per person. You can download an application here and submit it to the church office. Application deadline is May 3.

Pastors’ Retreat

..

As pastors, we are taking this week to evaluate many key areas of the church. Kenneth Maresco, in particular, is providing a lot of leadership in helping us look at everything we do from care groups to teaching and training, as well as evangelism and outreach. We are so grateful that a family in our church is letting us use a house they own for the retreat, which is a real blessing.

We really covet everyone’s prayers that the Lord would give us wisdom, that we would make good progress and that he would lead us in serving the members of this church that we love so much. It’s a great honor to be able to serve as your pastors. Please pray for us and for our families.
