Building in Uganda
1 Comments..

Here’s word from Isaac Hydoski about a prayer request from our brothers and sisters in Kiburara, Uganda:
This past January I traveled with a team from Covenant Life to the village of Kiburara in Western Uganda. There we spent about 10 days coming alongside our sister church, Kiburara Gospel Centre, to help lead a youth crusade and other outreach efforts.
While we were there we clearly saw the church’s need for a new building and learned that the children had been making crafts to raise money. God allowed us to contribute by purchasing the crafts, and later on Covenant Life Church followed up with an additional gift of $1,000.
Kiburara Gospel Centre is currently meeting in a building that holds about 100 people, but the church has grown to over 150, mainly through conversions. Even more compelling than this space crunch is Pastor Moses’ vision for the building to function as a community center. He sees the facility being used throughout the week for education classes, weekly outreaches, and ministering to the many orphans in the area. But because funds have run out, construction has been halted while the church prays for God to provide. The church does tithe and raises funds toward the project, but the people are all farmers and will need a large crop harvest in order to raise more money.
Let’s pray with the Kiburara church that God will abundantly meet the need and provide for them to complete the building! Here’s how Moses put it: “Pray with us. This is how far we have gone, and we need God to do something. Currently we are stopping here because we do not have more money, but our trust is in the Lord.”

Know Your Enemy
0 Comments..
In his message on Sunday, Eric Simmons considered the nature of our spiritual battle and how Christians can “stand against the schemes of the devil” (Eph. 6:10).
These words by John Stott from his commentary on that same passage have been helpful to me:
“A thorough knowledge of the enemy and a healthy respect for his prowess are a necessary preliminary to victory in war. Similarly, if we underestimate our spiritual enemy, we shall see no need for God’s armour, we shall go out to the battle unarmed, with no weapons but our own puny strength, and we shall be quickly and ignominiously defeated.”

Ephesians, Part 24: Application
0 Comments..
Yesterday Eric Simmons preached a powerful message from Eph.6:10-12 on the battle Christians face. He asked four questions:
1. What are we fighting for?
2. Who are we fighting?
3. How does our enemy fight?
4. How do we fight against our enemy?
You can listen online or download the message here.
Application questions:
1. C.S. Lewis wrote: “There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them.” Eric added a third category: a Christian who believes in the devil but ignores him. What are some of your common misconceptions about spiritual warfare?
2. Satan fights by “scheming” (i.e., planning a strategy) with the intent to deceive people and oppose God.
a. How has your faith been assaulted so as to doubt God’s goodness, power, wisdom and love? How can you apply God’s Word to battle these doubts?
b. How has your Christ’s salvation been undermined by the lie that Jesus forgives most of your sins, just not the big one that is always on your mind? What truths of God’s Word can combat this lie?
c. How has the lie that you are too busy or too tired to spend time in God’s Word undermined the power, sufficiency and authority of Scripture in your heart and practice? What must you do to repent, believe and practice differently?
3. In spiritual warfare, we are fighting for the advance of the gospel. There are many in the “mission field” of your life who remain captives of the kingdom of darkness. With whom in your family, your neighborhood or your work can you be praying for and sharing the gospel?
4. Each day, how can you be strengthened for the battle by the power and strength of the resurrected Christ?

This Sunday and the Rest of Ephesians
0 Comments..
This Sunday, Eric Simmons will preach from Ephesians 6:10-12. This is the first of a three-part series we will be doing on spiritual warfare as we near the end of Ephesians. In this first message, “Our Battle,” Eric will focus on our battle with the devil and his fallen angels. More importantly, we will study Christ and the sufficient strength he gives us to make our stand against our powerful enemy.
On May 17: Our Armor. Braden Greer will focus on the armor God has given us for the battle (Ephesians 6:13-17).
On May 24: Our Mission. Robin will preach from Ephesians 6:18-20. This passage deals with the importance and power of prayer in the mission of the gospel.
But going back to this week, we have a full Sunday coming up. Bob will be leading with guest band Reilly from our sister church, Covenant Fellowship. We will also have several folks baptized, and will take a moment in the service to honor the mothers among us for their precious service to the Lord and their families.

Book of the Month
0 Comments..
On the first Sunday of each month, we make a book recommendation. An an obvious selection for this month, in light of the 10:31 youth ministry’s recent drama/musical production), is Pilgrim’s Progress in Today’s English.
As your pastors, we will never stop urging you, appealing to you, badgering you to take advantage of the countless good books available for our edification and growth. For the past two weekends, the youth of this church have amazed and inspired us with “Pilgrim”—a musical and dramatic interpretation of John Bunyan’s classic work, Pilgrim’s Progress.
Thus, it only makes sense that this month’s book recommendation would be Pilgrim’s Progress.
First published in 1678—that’s 331 years ago—this book has never gone out of print. It has been translated into more than 200 languages. The great British preacher Charles Spurgeon read this book over 100 times in his life! Of all the books ever published in the English language, only the Bible has sold more copies throughout history than Pilgrim’s Progress.
“As I walked through the wilderness of the world, I came to a place where there was a den. There I lay down to sleep; and as I slept, I dreamed a dream. In my dream I saw a man clothed with rags, standing by a path with a book in his hand and a great burden upon his back. His face was turned from his own house, which stood nearby. I saw him open his book and read, then begin to weep. No longer being able to control his feelings, he broke out with a mournful cry, saying, “What shall I do?”
Considered the greatest Christian allegory ever written, Part One traces Christian’s pilgrimage from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City. Along the way he encounters a host of characters—friends and enemies alike—who help and hinder his travels. The reader travels with Christian as he wallows in the Slough of Despond … battles Apollyon in the Valley of Humiliation … barely escapes with his life from Vanity Fair … is beaten and starved in Doubting Castle … and finally crosses the dark river to the celestial city itself.
In Part Two, Christian’s wife and children make the pilgrimage to the Celestial City, accompanied by Mr. Valiant-For-Truth and their warrior friend, Greatheart.
Though some will prefer the original version, we have provided this modern translation for the bookstore. We have also stocked the bookstore with this children’s version called Dangerous Journey (illustrated). The illustrations alone are well worth the price of the book.
Buy them! Read them! Read them 100 times!
As John Bunyan wrote in his original introduction, “This book will make a traveler of thee.” Let it strengthen and inspire you on your pilgrimage to the Celestial City.
