‘A Woman’s Answer to a Man’s Question’
3 Comments..
To close his message this past Sunday, Joshua Harris read a poem from the 19th century by Mary T. Lathrap. (Sorry to all you first service people; due to first service running long, Josh read the poem in second service only—part of the motivation for sharing it here.)
Lathrap’s poem was “written in reply to a man’s poetic unfolding of what he conceived to be a woman’s duty.” It went hand in hand with Josh’s sermon text for the day: “Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.”—1 Peter 3:7 (ESV)
Do you know you have asked for the costliest thing
Ever made by the hand above—
A woman’s heart, and a woman’s life
And a woman’s wonderful love?
Do you know you have asked for this priceless thing
As a child might ask for a toy,
Demanding what others have died to win,
With the reckless dash of a boy?
You have written my lesson of duty out,
Man-like you have questioned me;
Now stand at the bar of my woman’s soul
Until I shall question thee.
You require your mutton shall always be hot,
Your socks and your shirt be whole;
I require your heart to be true as God’s stars,
And as pure as heaven your soul.
You require a cook for your mutton and beef;
I require a far better thing.
A seamstress you’re wanting for socks and shirts;
I look for a man and a king.
A king for the beautiful realm called home,
And a man that the maker, God,
Shall look upon as he did the first
And say, “It is very good.”
I am fair and young, but the rose will fade
From my soft, young cheek one day,
Will you love me then ‘mid the falling leaves,
As you did ‘mid the bloom of May?
Is your heart an ocean so strong and deep,
I may launch my all on its tide?
A loving woman finds heaven or hell
On the day she is made a bride.
I require all things that are grand and true,
All things that a man should be;
If you give all this, I would stake my life
To be all you demand of me.
If you cannot do this — a laundress and cook
You can hire, with little to pay,
But a woman’s heart and a woman’s life
Are not to be won that way.

A Conference on Christian Sexuality
5 Comments..

We live in a culture that is constantly bombarding us with half-truths and lies about what sexual freedom is and where we will find true fulfillment in life, but God, who made us and every facet of our being, created us with clear intentions for our sexuality. You’re invited to spend an evening and a morning seeking a better understanding of God’s will and how we can glorify him as sexual creatures.
The conference runs Friday, August 6, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday, August 7, from 9:30 a.m. to noon in the Events Center. Braden Greer will teach. Cost is $3 at the door.
The conference material is intended to serve primarily singles 18 and up, but as the goal is to equip Christians to think biblically about their sexuality, there will be broad application for those who are married as well. Mature high school students may also benefit. Parents and students who have specific questions about attending are encouraged to contact Braden Greer or Isaac Hydsoki at the church office.
Topics will include “The Individual Pursuit of Christian Sexuality,” “Receiving Help from the Church in the Pursuit of Christian Sexuality,” and “Giving Help to Others in the Pursuit of Christian Sexuality.”

Encouraging Report from the Prison Ministry
2 Comments..
Dave Hartman sent in this encouraging news about the work of Covenant Life’s Prison Ministry. Dave leads the Prison Ministry each Wednesday evening at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Clarksburg.
I am writing a quick note to share with you some evidences of grace occurring in the Prison Ministry.
During worship, between songs, we encourage the men to read Scripture. On a recent Wednesday, after three songs, one inmate spoke up. He had tears running down his cheek, and he said he felt something in the room that he had never experienced before. He said he wanted to convert from Islam to Christianity and needed help and our prayers.
David Huff suggested that we pray right away, so I told the men we were going to pray for this fellow. Without any instruction, several men, about six or so, surrounded him and laid hands on him. I prayed and asked God to save him. After we concluded, the men recited Scriptures centered on salvation, one after another. It was so sweet.
The Spirit of God was very noticeable, and I felt like we were in a birthing center!
After the message, instead of a small group setting, I took him aside for private counseling. It turns out his father is a minister, and his mom is a Christian as well ... I preached the gospel one more time and instructed him to read the book of John over the next week and look for Christ.
The next Wednesday I pulled this new brother aside again for another private session and found out he had read the entire book of John and was very encouraged. Amazing what happens when you point a man to God’s word!
There’s also another brother who has been growing in his faith. He has been leading Bible studies and prayer meetings almost every day within the pod [section of the facility]. He recently added a Spanish-speaking prayer meeting as well. He asked last week for the Covenant Life Team to fill out prayer cards so that the prayer group could pray for us. This brother has gone from two or three in attendance at his prayer meeting to eight! He said he has become the “go to” guy for prayer. Even though he is getting 15 years for his crimes, he has much faith and joy in God’s plan for his life.

Living Hope, Part 11
0 Comments..
Yesterday, Robin Boisvert preached part 11 of our Living Hope series in the first letter of Peter. What happened to part 10, you ask? Well, Joshua had planned to preach from 1 Peter 3:7 in sequence, following on the heels of his “A Word to Wives” message from 1 Peter 3:1-6, but because of his mother’s passing, he asked Robin to step in and preach the next passage, 1 Peter 3:8-22, out of sequence. Then Josh picked up with his message, “A Word to Husbands (And a Few More for Wives)” on July 18. Make sense?!
Here are options for reviewing and applying the message:
• Listen online or download an MP3.
• Download the summary outline (in PDF format).
• Use the questions below for further reflection and application to your life:
1. Robin shared that the atmosphere of the church should be one of unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly and sisterly love, tender-heartedness and humility (1 Peter 3:8). In which one of these character qualities do you desire to grow?
2. How are you tempted to respond when you are reviled or slandered or evil is done against you (e.g. fight fire with fire, insist on your rights, demand fairness, plot revenge)? According to Jesus’ example (1 Peter 2:21-23) and Peter’s words in 1 Peter 3:9-10, how should believers respond to evil? How can you grow to emulate Christ’s example?
3. When you suffer for doing good (1 Peter 3:13-15), how can believing that Christ is the reigning, sovereign and exalted Lord strengthen your faith and enable you to persevere?
4. Robin taught us that giving a “defense … for the hope that is in you” (1 Peter 3:15b) means being a relationship builder, not an argument winner. In sharing the good news, which do you tend to be? What does it look like to be a witness for the gospel with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:16)?
5. Robin shared that Jesus suffered once for sins, was resurrected from the dead, is exalted and seated at the right hand of God with angels, authorities and powers subjected to him (1 Peter 3:18-19, 21-22). Is all your hope in this good news or do other hopes compete for allegiance?
