T4G Live

I wanted to let you know about a unique worship album that was just released in December. It features our own Bob Kauflin.
In April of 2008, over 5000 people, mostly pastors, attended Together for the Gospel in Louisville, Ky. Along with hearing gospel-centered teaching, they worshiped the Savior with old and new hymns. Bob led on piano. The singing was theologically rich, passionate and inspiring.
Now you can hear what it was like to be there. The album is called Together for the Gospel Live and features 16 hymns. The cool thing for us is that one of them is our hymn for March, “And Can It Be,” by Charles Wesley.
The sound of 5000 (mostly male) voices is really something! Hope you can check this CD out.

Grace in Juárez

A couple weeks ago I got a really encouraging report from Geney Harvey. She wrote to share about a recent trip the Spanish 4 class of Covenant Life School took to serve our sister church in Juárez, Mexico, Iglesia Gracia Soberana de Cd. Juárez.
In her update to parents of students who were part of the trip, Geney recounted several answers to prayer: no one got sick; everyone stayed safe; and the students did great communicating in Spanish. These teenagers served selflessly at the school there and encouraged the church as a whole simply by their willingness to come serve in Juarez when they could have stayed home in their “safe” country. Geney wrote about one particular highlight:
The Lord used them to witness to the students in the school, many of whom are not Christians. (As you may remember, the school in Juarez has an evangelistic focus and is open to non-Christians as well as Christians.) All the students were asked to share their testimony with various classes many times during the week, and on their last day they were also asked to lead a chapel for grades 7 through 9. During the chapel time they led worship and shared various exhortations from Scripture—all in Spanish. Only the Lord knows what seeds were planted in that chapel as our students shared from their heart about the value of knowing Christ, but we do know that He promises that His word will not return void without accomplishing His purpose (even despite limited language proficiency!).
To the teenagers who participated in this trip: Thank you for using your time in Juárez to represent the Savior in your words and deeds!

Early Start on Spring Cleaning

Here’s a quick report from Dave Brewer about the Youth Ministries’ Trash Pickup Day:
This past Saturday, our 10:31 youth ministry picked up trash along Muncaster Mill Road, cleared junk from the curbs in local communities, and cleaned up brush and debris along the roads. About 70 parents and teens showed up, and they all served so well and humbly. The community showed a lot of gratefulness, and many people yelled “thanks!” out their car windows to the group. Some even stopped and wanted to communicate how much they respected teens giving up a Saturday morning to pick up trash.
The photo at right is of some teens finding a deer on the side of the road. They thought it was pretty cool…

More Ammo for the Fight Against Lust
2 CommentsIn his message this past Sunday, Matt Maka referenced a list of lies we can believe when tempted by lust, along with passages from Scripture that help us combat those lies. This list was originally printed in my book, Sex Is Not the Problem (Lust Is) (formerly known as Not Even a Hint), but you’re welcome to download it here in PDF form if you don’t have the book. Hope you find it to be a helpful resource: Lust’s Lies and the Truth of God’s Word (PDF, 92k)

Ephesians, Part 18: Application
2 Comments
Yesterday Matt Maka preached an excellent message from Ephesians 5:1-14 titled “Sexuality and the Beloved Child of God.” You can listen online or download the message here.
Application questions:
1. Ephesians 5:1-2 tells us of the richness of Christ’s love for us at the cross and the immensity of the Father’s love in adopting us as His “beloved children.” How does this expression of love toward you motivate you to walk in purity?
2. Ephesians 5:3 tells us that “sexual immorality and all impurity…must not even be named among you.” The NIV says, “there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity….” Where is there a hint of sexual sin in your actions, your thoughts or your words that you need to get rid of?
3. Matt shared six ways we can “walk in love” and “imitate God” in our sexuality. Which of the following do you most need to do?a. Identity the deceptive lies you believe about sexual sin (v. 6). Memorize Scripture to combat these lies.
b. Cultivate thankfulness for where God has placed you and what God has given you (v. 4).
c. Remove sexual temptations (relationships, technology or media) from your life (v. 7).
d. Walk in the light and confess your sin to a trusted brother or sister (v. 8).
e. Make it your aim to please God by walking in love toward one another (v. 10).
f. Cry out to God for mercy and help (v. 14).

A Hymn and a Reminder
0 CommentsBack in November we began a season devoted to learning great hymns of the faith. Each month we’re highlighting a different hymn in corporate worship and working to learn it together by memory. The hymn for March is “And Can It Be?” by Charles Wesley.
Because we believe memorizing hymns helps us obey Scripture’s command to “let the word of Christ dwell in you richly” (Colossians 3:16), we are encouraging everyone to sing these hymns with their families, Care Groups, and on their own. The process of memorization is a great way to rehearse these truths and store them up in our hearts.
Visit the Hymns: How Sweet the Sound page for lyrics and background on all the hymns we’re learning, and to learn about “And Can It Be?” in particular.
Also, please take a moment to read the note for parents that we posted here on the blog yesterday.
