“A lively sense of having been forgiven…”

Here’s that excellent quote Robin used in his message this Sunday:

Man’s greatest need is forgiveness.… It is so easy for Christians to forget what it meant for them to come to Christ and be forgiven. But a lively sense of having been forgiven is essential to vital Christian devotion; without it, one easily leaves his “first love” (Rev. 2.4). And without it, he will tend to lack the forgiving attitude toward others that is essential to proper Christian living.… We need to learn about forgiveness and spend time thinking about our own forgiveness. Remember the pit from which you were dug.… Christians are forgiven people—and should be thankful for it; that’s what makes us unique.… Of all the people in the world, only Christians are forgiven, a fact which should amaze us, humble us and cause us to carry the message of forgiveness to others.

Ephesians, Part 17: Application

Yesterday Robin preached from Ephesians 4:30-32 on fighting bitterness. He did a great job unpacking the “Motivation” of verse 30, the “Exhortation” of verse 31, and the call for “Imitation” in verse 32.

You can listen online or download the message here.

Application questions:

1. Robin taught us that there is a spiritual dimension to our actions.  Bitterness not only impacts our relationships but can grieve (sadden or distress) the Holy Spirit.  Why should this motivate us to keep bitterness from rooting in our hearts?

2. The first step in change is humble honesty.  How do you respond when you are offended? Does Ephesians 4:31 describe you? If so, humbly admit your sin, bring it into the light by repenting to God and confessing it to trusted fellow believers.

3. Robin quoted Jay Adams who wrote, “Remember the pit from which you were dug ... Christians are forgiven people … a fact which should amaze us, humble us and cause us to carry the message of forgiveness to others.”  How can remembering the enormity of our sin against God help us to extend forgiveness to others?  (See also Matthew 18:21-35)

4. Robin said that if one person in a relationship will pursue humility, there is great hope for reconciliation.  Do you need to humbly go to a brother or sister and seek to be reconciled?

5. In what practical ways can you cultivate kindness and tenderness toward a brother or sister who has offended you?

Seminar for Parents of Children with Special Needs

Joe Lee sent me another item I want to highlight for you. Here’s his description of an upcoming seminar:

There are over 45,000 children in the D.C. metro area who have special needs, and the number is growing every day.  A child with a special need is someone who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.  These activities include but are not limited to walking, seeing, learning, working, performing manual tasks, speaking and hearing.

There are many children in Covenant Life Church who have special needs and thus are not able to fully participate in the life of the church. This applies to their families who care for them as well.

We’ve planned a seminar to provide encouragement for parents of children with special needs. These parents can often feel alone in their trials.  We want to use this meeting to encourage and remind them that they are not alone as they faithfully care for their children—that God is with them—and we as a church are with them.

We also hope this gathering will help the parents connect with others who have similar trials and thus become a means of encouragement and a resource to one another.

The seminar is on Saturday, February 28, in the Edwards Room from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Gary Ricucci will lead a time of prayer and ministry for the families. We would love to see as many members as possible attend to express their love and pray for these parents.

Proverbs 18:14: “A man’s spirit will endure sickness, ?but a crushed spirit who can bear?”
