Scott Hall and Team Help Spruce Up at Arlington National Cemetery

It’s always great to see Covenant Life members being recognized for service to our community. Scott Hall and his landscaping company recently took part in an annual Renewal and Remembrance project at Arlington National Cemetery, and the Frederick News-Post did a nice write-up on the event.

Scott comments: “I visited the cemetery last year and it just struck me that we should be a part of this.”

Encouraging Report from the Prison Ministry

Dave Hartman sent in this encouraging news about the work of Covenant Life’s Prison Ministry. Dave leads the Prison Ministry each Wednesday evening at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Clarksburg.

I am writing a quick note to share with you some evidences of grace occurring in the Prison Ministry.

During worship, between songs, we encourage the men to read Scripture.  On a recent Wednesday, after three songs, one inmate spoke up.  He had tears running down his cheek, and he said he felt something in the room that he had never experienced before.  He said he wanted to convert from Islam to Christianity and needed help and our prayers.

David Huff suggested that we pray right away, so I told the men we were going to pray for this fellow. Without any instruction, several men, about six or so, surrounded him and laid hands on him.  I prayed and asked God to save him.  After we concluded, the men recited Scriptures centered on salvation, one after another. It was so sweet.

The Spirit of God was very noticeable, and I felt like we were in a birthing center!

After the message, instead of a small group setting, I took him aside for private counseling. It turns out his father is a minister, and his mom is a Christian as well ... I preached the gospel one more time and instructed him to read the book of John over the next week and look for Christ.

The next Wednesday I pulled this new brother aside again for another private session and found out he had read the entire book of John and was very encouraged.  Amazing what happens when you point a man to God’s word!

There’s also another brother who has been growing in his faith.  He has been leading Bible studies and prayer meetings almost every day within the pod [section of the facility].  He recently added a Spanish-speaking prayer meeting as well. He asked last week for the Covenant Life Team to fill out prayer cards so that the prayer group could pray for us.  This brother has gone from two or three in attendance at his prayer meeting to eight!  He said he has become the “go to” guy for prayer.  Even though he is getting 15 years for his crimes, he has much faith and joy in God’s plan for his life.

First ‘Good News Club’ Was a Success

Mike Bradshaw coaches kids before they go outside for exercise.

Starting this fall, Covenant Life volunteers hope to host year-long “Good News Clubs” at several public schools in our area. If you and your family would like to get in on the excitement, please join us for a Good News Club Information Meeting on Sunday, June 27, from 1:15 to 1:45 p.m. in Room 155.

Here’s a report on Covenant Life’s first Good News Club:

For six weeks this spring, Covenant Life Church had the joy of hosting a club at a nearby elementary school. Over 15 students participated in this after-school program, enthusiastically singing about Jesus and learning from the Bible. Pastors Mike Bradshaw, Joe Lee, and Ben Wikner shared in the teaching, while Charlene Vigil, Becky Faherty, and Suzy Somerville provided world-class administrative support. Several Covenant Life teens served by befriending the club members and helping to lead singing.

The club met after school on Wednesdays from 3:15-4:45. At each meeting club members received a snack, memorized Scripture, heard the gospel repeatedly during times of teaching and singing, were inspired by missionary stories, and had a chance to speak one-on-one with an adult if they had questions. Prizes and goodie bags made the whole experience a little sweeter.

Good News Clubs are a ministry of Child Evangelism Fellowship, which has served children in hundreds of countries around the world since 1937. A few other churches in Montgomery County have been successfully hosting Good News Clubs for years; the club held recently was Covenant Life’s first venture into this exciting form of community outreach. But there is almost unlimited potential for expansion.

After the final club meeting on June 9, a grateful parent handed one of the club leaders this note: “I cannot express enough thanks for all you instilled in my son. Unfortunately, we stopped going to church and being strengthened by the Word shortly after he was born, and although I try to show or express to him how awesome our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is, he lets me know he’s still not sure if he believes. I feel assured that Jesus has sent His servants from your church to speak the Word of God to him and plant the seed. Praise His Holy Name!”

A ‘Wonderful Helper’

In case you didn’t see it on the One Blog, I just wanted to highlight a recent post about one of our members, Olu Edegbai, and the way he has been laying down his life to serve local kids at the Emory Grove Resource Center. Thanks for your example, brother!

Hope you enjoy reading the post.

A Life of Servanthood

A few weeks ago, I gave a message called “The Poor and Needy.” Below is a testimony of how a member in our church is living out this message. We asked Sherly Giglio to share about how her husband, Peter, has given of his time and money to bless others over the years. I hope this story will be both encouraging and provoking.

When I was asked to share about my husband’s generosity and his heart for the lost and needy, it was easy to come up with a life time of examples. For the past 32 years, I have seen Peter give, give, and give even more. He humbly serves without looking for recognition or anything in return. This is seen in many ways, such as: providing rides to people in need, opening our home and giving people a place to live, visiting a wounded soldier, going on mission trips, and giving financially to our church and other ministries, as well as to those in need.

I’d like to share the most recent example of his selfless generosity. It is something that was close to his heart:

Back in August of this year, Peter had the privilege of serving with Drew Garfield to help plan a work day at the Laytonia community, located across the street from Covenant Life. Initially, he gave of his time by attending planning meetings and liaising with the Laytonia Homeowners Association Board to see how we, as a church, could help them. This was followed by numerous trips to Home Depot and time spent organizing materials. Finally, the big work day came. Volunteers from Covenant Life and Gracia Soberana labored alongside people from the Laytonia community. What a joy it was to see multiple races, rich and poor, Christian and non-Christian working side by side each other. Most importantly, the work day provided an open door to share the gospel!

Another way Peter demonstrates his heart for the needy is that his main focus in business is to provide excellent service and be able to give even more money and time to further God’s kingdom. Peter recently did a commercial advertising our company. In the commercial, he let people know that a portion of the sales would be given to Give Uganda Water.

Peter recently returned from a trip to Fabens, Tex., where a team led by Grant Layman built an apartment for Dean Adamek (who runs an orphanage in Mexico that our church has partnered with). This apartment will allow his family and staff to have a place in the U.S. to stay when circumstances make it difficult to cross the border.

I am reminded over and over again, through my husband’s heart and example, of how much he loves the Lord and gives of himself so that the gospel continues to go forward.
