Special Guests at 10:31

Dave Brewer gave me this description of what’s happening tomorrow night at the 10:31 youth ministry meeting (7:30 p.m. in the Events Center):

10:31 meetings always present a great opportunity for parents and teens to gather to worship God and be taught from his Word.

Tomorrow night will be a bit different though. We have the privilege of hosting Dean and Denise Adamek and their three sons for this meeting. Dean Adamek is the director of Rancho 3M Christian orphanage in Guadalupe, Mexico, where the 10:31 youth ministry visits and serves every summer. We have worked with Dean and Rancho 3M for many years now, but this is the first time that Dean has visited our 10:31 meeting.

We will spend the evening in a question and answer session with Dean and Denise, hearing how the Lord saved them and how he called and led them to serve at an orphanage in Mexico. All are welcome to come and hear what God is doing through this family. Hope to see you there.

The New Name Is “Next”

After ten years, we’re giving New Attitude a new name. New Attitude—that is, the name—is over. This year we’re launching Next. The event takes place Memorial Day weekend, May 23-26, at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, Md. Here’s a quick Q & A:

Why change the name?
The name New Attitude was a holdover from a magazine I published many years ago, but it really has no connection with what the conference is about. The name “Next” better captures the vision that’s always been at the core of this event.

What is the vision of Next?
So much of the heart and mission of this event will be the same. The vision of Next is to gather worshipers of Jesus Christ who burn with a passion to see the gospel transferred to the next generation.

Are there any common misconceptions about the name “Next”?
Some might think the name Next is preoccupied with what is new, the latest or the “next thing.” Or even the idea that the “next generation” is more exciting because young is better than old. Actually, it’s just the opposite. We’re not concerned with what is new. We’re not here to innovate. We want to proclaim, understand and faithfully transmit truth from God’s Word that never changes—truth that is solid and sound and old. And we’re not fascinated with the next generation because it’s better. We just love Jesus and we want whoever is coming behind us to know him, love him and worship him with us.

Who should come to this conference?
Over the years New Attitude has come to be thought of as a “singles conference” or a “college event.” But Next recognizes that transferring the gospel is not limited to an age group or a marital status. I view it as an opportunity to introduce attendees to the faithful pastors and theologians who have most deeply affected my life. There’s no generation gap. There’s only rapt attention and joy in the glorious gospel that transcends all cultures and ages.

We hope to see you in Baltimore!

Yesterday’s March for Life

Yesterday a group of more than 50 Covenant Life members led by Grant Layman and Mark Mitchell met at the church and took the Metro down to the National Mall to participate in this year’s March for Life.

Grant told me he was very encouraged—especially by “the large number of youth and singles from our church that clearly had a real burden for this issue—that it was their own initiative and excitement driving their participation. It’s exciting to see the next generation gripped by the seriousness of this issue and want to make a statement by participating in the March for Life.”

Mark agreed, saying, “Throughout the March, I was particularly blessed to hear our young people break out into spontaneous singing of songs to the Lord. It was very clear that they were there participating not just because of enthusiasm for an issue, but as an expression of honor and an act of worship to the Lord.”

Christmas Caroling This Sunday

This past Sunday we talked about ways we can be investing in relationships with unbelievers and reaching out to our community during the Christmas season. One opportunity I mentioned was Mike and Sarah Thompson’s plan for Christmas caroling this Sunday afternoon.

Here’s the scoop: Thaw out your vocal chords, and meet in the main lobby of the church at 4:30 p.m. this Sunday. Mike and Sarah will help organize groups of carolers and assign them to different neighborhoods, both to sing and hand out invitations for our Christmas Eve services. Song sheets, instructions, and maps will be provided.

Please consider if you and your family could participate in this free and fun way to reach out to our community.
