Ephesians, Part 5: Application
0 Comments
Yesterday Robin Boisvert preached a message from Ephesians 2:1-10 titled, “Our Salvation: Changed from Death to Life,” in which he considered “what we were, what God has done, and how he did it.”
You can listen online or download the message here.
And here are some application questions, prepared by pastor Brian Chesemore:
1. Robin shared how we need to be re-educated by God’s perspective on our sin in order to appreciate our need for mercy. How does Paul accomplish this in the first three verses?
2. In verse 4, Paul highlights a most amazing turn in Scripture. What has happened that Paul can so quickly turn from the wrath of God to the grace of God?
3.What does it mean that we are in union with Christ? Why is this union so amazing?
4. How can you seize an opportunity this week in your job or relationships to testify to the mercy and grace of God in your life?

Ephesians, Part 4: Application

Yesterday, Jeff Purswell preached from Ephesians 1:15-23, considering Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians.
You can listen online or download the message here.
And pastor Brian Chesemore has prepared these questions to help us to continue applying the message as a group or as individuals:
1. Jeff shared that much of what he has learned about prayer came from listening to others pray or reading their prayers. Who are the men or women who have shaped your practice of prayer?
2. How would you describe your current relationship with God in prayer? What content tends to fill your prayers?
3. Paul’s example of prayer teaches that we are not simply passive observers of God’s unfolding plans. Instead prayer is the means by which God works out many of his sovereign plans. What are God’s purposes that we should regularly pray to see unfold?
4. What does Paul’s prayer reveal about your need for the Spirit’s work?
5. How can you take Paul’s prayer and make it your own this week for your family, friends and our church?

Being Found in Christ
0 CommentsHere’s a section of last Sunday’s sermon where I speak to unbelievers about the importance of being found in Christ. If you’re not a Christian I hope you’ll consider these words and respond by turning from sin and believing in Jesus.

Beholding the Trinitarian God
0 CommentsSomething I wasn’t able to cover in my sermon on Ephesians 1:3-14 was what we learn from it about the Trinity. The Bible teaches us that there is one true and living God, who eternally exists in three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Christians call this the Trinity—the mysterious truth that God is one in three persons. Though the word “trinity” is never used in the Bible, we see this truth clearly taught in passages like Ephesians 1.
Let me encourage you to listen to Dr. Bruce Ware’s sermon “Beholding the Trinitarian God,” which he preached from this passage a couple years ago. Dr. Ware walks through these verses pointing out the teamwork of God the Father as he chooses, God the Son as he lays down his life, and God the Holy Spirit as he applies the work of the cross to our hearts.

Ephesians, Part 3: Application

Yesterday I preached the third message of our series from Ephesians 1:3-14, in which I considered these three questions:
1. What are “spiritual blessings”?
2. How do God’s spiritual blessings come to us?
3. What do God’s spiritual blessings reveal about his ultimate purpose?
Ultimately, the answers drew us deeper into the heart of the gospel, and in taking communion after the sermon we were able to further celebrate the glorious truth of—and the “spiritual blessings” brought to us by—our union with Christ in his death and resurrection.
You can listen online or download the message here.
And pastor Don DeVries has prepared these questions to help you continue applying the message on your own or in a small group setting:
1. God has lavishly blessed us in Christ with “every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places”—election, holiness, adoption, redemption, and forgiveness. As you take time to ponder each blessing, how can you live in the good of them on a daily basis?
2. Josh reminded us that eleven times in verses 3-14 Paul states that all of God’s blessings come to us because we are joined and united to Christ (i.e. in Christ). How does reflecting on this truth stir your affection and love for Jesus?
3. According to verses 9-10, God’s ultimate purpose is to unite all things in Christ. We can reflect God’s ultimate purpose by demonstrating unity in the church. In what practical ways can you do this?
4. Verses 3-14 are one long sentence (in the original Greek) that bursts forth from an enraptured and impassioned heart in worship and praise. As you meditate on the truths of these verses, take time to give thanks and praise for all the spiritual blessings in Christ.

Ephesians, Part 2: Application

Yesterday Mark Mullery, senior pastor of our sister church Sovereign Grace Church of Fairfax preached from Ephesians 1:3-6. Thanks again, Mark, for serving us so well on such short notice!
You can listen online or download the message here.
And here are this week’s application questions, prepared by pastor Don DeVries, for your consideration on your own or in a small group setting:
1. Charles Spurgeon wrote, “I believe in the doctrine of election, because I am quite certain that, if God had not chosen me, I should never have chosen him; and I am quite sure he chose me before I was born, or else he never would have chosen me afterward…for I could never find any reason in myself why he should have looked upon me with special love.” How does your own story of conversion, like Mr. Spurgeon’s, magnify God’s electing love?
2. Ephesians 1:4 states that God “chose us in him” [i.e., in Christ]. All of God’s redemptive activity on our behalf is centered in His Son—how does reflecting on that stir your love for the Savior and cultivate humility in your heart?
3. How does contemplating that God specifically chose you before time began cultivate an assurance of His unchanging and eternal favor and love for you?
4. Ephesians 1:6 states that God’s initiative through Christ in election, redemption and adoption is “to the praise of his glorious grace.” How do these truths inspire gratitude, joy and worship in your heart?
