Kevin DeYoung Will Preach on October 3

2 Comments

Pastor and author Kevin DeYoung will be with us at Covenant Life on Sunday, October 3, preaching from the first chapter of Leviticus.  In his message Kevin will outline the sacrificial themes of Leviticus, pointing out how the book can be practical in its potential application, inspiring in its call to holiness, and rich in its foreshadowing of the Lord Jesus Christ. This look at Leviticus should provide a fresh perspective on some foundational gospel truths.

Kevin DeYoung is the Senior Pastor at University Reformed Church in East Lansing, Mich., across the street from Michigan State University. He serves on the board of RCA Integrity, a renewal group within the Reformed Church in America.  He is the co-author of Why We’re Not Emergent: By Two Guys Who Should Be and Why We Love the Church: In Praise of Institutions and Organized Religion, and the author of Just Do Something: How to Make a Decision Without Dreams, Visions, Fleeces, Open Doors, Random Bible Verses, Casting Lots, Liver Shivers, Writing in the Sky, etc. and The Good News We Almost Forgot: Rediscovering the Gospel in a 16th Century Catechism. Kevin and his wife, Trisha, have four children: Ian, Jacob, Elizabeth, and Paul.

Dr. Russell Moore On Adoption

0 Comments

Join us on Sunday, September 19, as Dr. Russell Moore of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary comes to teach on our adoption as children of God, and our call from God to care for orphans.

Dr. Moore summarizes his upcoming message in this way: “Not every Christian is called to adopt. But every Christian is called to care for widows and orphans in their distress (Jas. 1:27) As we see our own adoption in Christ, we learn to embrace our Father God’s heart for the fatherless. And as we care for the world’s orphans, the more we will see the radical glory of what God has done for us in the gospel.”

Bio
Russell D. Moore is the Senior Vice President for Academic Administration and Dean of the School of Theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. The grandson of a Mississippi Baptist preacher, Dr. Moore is also a preaching pastor at Highview Baptist Church in Louisville, where he ministers weekly. Dr. Moore writes and speaks frequently on topics ranging from the Kingdom of God to the mission of adoption to a theology of country music. He is a senior editor of Touchstone: A Journal of Mere Christianity and also blogs regularly at Moore to the Point. Dr. Moore’s latest book is Adopted for Life: The Priority of Adoption for Christian Families and Churches, and he is working on the forthcoming, Tempted and Tried: Temptation and the Triumph of Christ. ‘A Woman’s Answer to a Man’s Question’

3 Comments

To close his message this past Sunday, Joshua Harris read a poem from the 19th century by Mary T. Lathrap. (Sorry to all you first service people; due to first service running long, Josh read the poem in second service only—part of the motivation for sharing it here.)

Lathrap’s poem was “written in reply to a man’s poetic unfolding of what he conceived to be a woman’s duty.”  It went hand in hand with Josh’s sermon text for the day: “Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.”—1 Peter 3:7 (ESV)

Do you know you have asked for the costliest thing
Ever made by the hand above—
A woman’s heart, and a woman’s life
And a woman’s wonderful love?

Do you know you have asked for this priceless thing
As a child might ask for a toy,
Demanding what others have died to win,
With the reckless dash of a boy?

You have written my lesson of duty out,
Man-like you have questioned me;
Now stand at the bar of my woman’s soul
Until I shall question thee.

You require your mutton shall always be hot,
Your socks and your shirt be whole;
I require your heart to be true as God’s stars,
And as pure as heaven your soul.

You require a cook for your mutton and beef;
I require a far better thing.
A seamstress you’re wanting for socks and shirts;
I look for a man and a king.

A king for the beautiful realm called home,
And a man that the maker, God,
Shall look upon as he did the first
And say, “It is very good.”

I am fair and young, but the rose will fade
From my soft, young cheek one day,
Will you love me then ‘mid the falling leaves,
As you did ‘mid the bloom of May?

Is your heart an ocean so strong and deep,
I may launch my all on its tide?
A loving woman finds heaven or hell
On the day she is made a bride.

I require all things that are grand and true,
All things that a man should be;
If you give all this, I would stake my life
To be all you demand of me.

If you cannot do this — a laundress and cook
You can hire, with little to pay,
But a woman’s heart and a woman’s life
Are not to be won that way.

Jared Mellinger Preaches Here On June 20

0 Comments

What will Covenant Life Church be like 25 years from now? 50 years? How often do you think about the work that God is doing across time and generations?  Do you believe your commitment to the church extends beyond your own lifetime?  What does it mean to participate in a purposeful transfer of the gospel to those who will come after you?

Jared Mellinger comes to Covenant Life on Sunday, June 20, to remind us that we are part of something far bigger than ourselves. Preaching from Psalm 78: 1-8, Jared will lay out a picture of the good news of God’s salvation being successfully passed from generation to generation. He’ll help us to step back and take in the truth that everyone has a part to play—that God is calling each of us to display his heart for those who will follow us.

Jared Mellinger is the Senior Pastor of Covenant Fellowship Church in Glen Mills, Pa. He joined the church’s pastoral team in 2006 after graduating from the Sovereign Grace Ministries Pastors College.  He assumed the role of senior pastor on October 12, 2008. Jared graduated from Kutztown University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education. He lives in Glen Mills with his wife Meghan and their four children.
