The Good Recession, Part 2: Application

Yesterday I preached the second message in this two-part series called “The Good Recession.” In last week’s message, I asked the question, “How should Christians who believe in a sovereign God think about these times—how can God use a bad economy for our spiritual good?” This week I continued with four more ways this can happen:

1. If it helps us reset our definition of “need.”
2. If it makes us more aware of our helplessness and God’s faithful provision.
3. If it helps us see that only King Jesus and His kingdom are worth living for.
4. If it encourages us to lay up our treasures in heaven.

You can listen online or download the message here.

Below are a few are questions I shared at the end of my message that should help you apply it.

1. How are you being anxious?
2. Where is your definition of “need” wrong?
3. Where is greed or worry distracting you from seeking the kingdom?
4. How could you use your resources to be rich toward God’s concerns?

Just listening to your talk on the good recession…

Only less than 10 minutes in, but it is great to look at needs rather than wants and what we have developed out of habit, not of necessity. I am as guilty as anyone, but really want to work on it. Thanks for your talk.

We are over here in Australia - near Newcastle.  My son in law Patrick visited over your way a while back - not sure if you met him.

I know i NEEDED to be at church this past Sunday to hear your message. With me being laid off from the job i had due to how this economy is, well, i due believer God brought me there to help me focus and to ask his help not to worry and to understand i really don’t need to buy things i want, which are not essential.

Thank you Josh, for helping me re-focus. Sometimes my definition of need is defined by the culture and it has crept into the church at large so I am not aware of it’s influence.
Also as you said in point 4 the big question is “Where is our heart?”
What do we treasure? What do we really value? Excellent searching questions.

Thank you, Josh, for effectively ministering God’s word to us yesterday.  One thing that has always amazed me about Covenant Life Church has been the pastor’s bold, humble, direct discussion of money.  Talking about money makes me people SQUIRM, and a cowardly pastor would rather talk about something “safe.”  You told us the truth about money and ourselves yesterday—may God bless every hearer of His word!

Thanks for your encouragement, brothers. I appreciate it.
