Your Favorite Proverb

Take a moment to leave a comment and share a favorite verse from Proverbs that God has used to help and instruct you.

Thank you for this series on Proverbs and the opportunity to spend time in this book. I have so clearly heard the call to wisdom during the messages these last two weeks.

Proverbs 16:9 is the verse that has been out in front for me recently, reminding me of God’s Sovereignty, His good plans and His power to accomplish them. “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

My favorite proverb is, “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and whoever captures souls is wise.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 is one that my husband and I return to again and again: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Proverbs has always been a challenging book for me.  I’m so grateful for the clear teaching in this series on how to approach the Proverbs and glean the wisdom God has for us there.

The classic passage that has most instructed me the last several years is Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

We no longer have oxen and mangers, but this proverb is still very applicable to us today:

“Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean, but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox.”  Proverbs 14:4

This proverb heartens me when life seems messy but the work is good, and in looking forward to raising our children.

Proverbs 3:5-8 is actually my life passage.  It reads:

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.

These verses help me directly fight my pride and remind me of the great reward in humbling myself before the Lord.

While Proverbs 9:10 is easily the heart and soul of Proverbs, There is a golden nugget of biblical wisdom in the verses immediately preceding it, Proverbs 9:8-9:

“Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you;
  reprove a wise man, and he will love you.

Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser;
  teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.”

I have found this verse not only a useful biblical lens through which I can discern the motives and intentions of others and avoid harm, it is more importantly a daily self-test by which I can grow. Do I take instruction and correction from others? Do I see the person giving me instruction or reproof as someone who loves and cares for me? While I still see the scoffer in me more often than the wise man, praise be to God that His grace is greater than all of my sin.

I must echo my gratefulness for these teachings on Proverbs.  We are all being challenged as a family by the messages and look forward to growing in the knowledge and fear of the Lord this year. One Proverb that has challenged me through the years is Proverbs 10:19, ‘When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise.’  Being a female, words are something I use all the time.  I’ve had many a conversation that afterward the Holy Spirit brings this verse to mind and I’ve had to go back and ask for forgiveness for my foolish speech or gossip. I’ll often pray now on my way to spend time with a friend or a ladies meeting (where I know words will be many!) that I would hold my tongue and only speak words that will benefit others.

I love proverbs 8:1-3 and Proverbs 9:1-6, where wisdom is personified as a woman, standing in the busiest or most prominent places of the town, screaming at people!  It’s an encouraging picture of God’s eagerness to reveal wisdom to us if we, as Robin taught us last Sunday, seek it earnestly like hidden treasure.

My favorite verse in the whole book is 8:17, which reads, “I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.” These passages are so heartening when wisdom seems elusive.

My favorite Proverb is:
Prov 30:8-9
8 ...Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me,
9 lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the Lord?”
or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God.

It’s a good reminder and a powerful passage.

There are so many practical instructions in Proverbs and one of my favorite verses is 14:30 “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise.” when I read it I think of sharing the good news of the gospel with other. I know that I am not the one who wins souls, it is the Spirit, but I rejoice knowing the I have the privilege of sharing the gospel with other.

Although I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite. I think this Proverb must be an important verse to consider since it shows up twice…especially for the single guys.

Proverbs 21:9 & 25:24
It is better to live in a corner of the housetop
than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife.

Two of my favorites Proverbs:
Chapter 2:1-7
  1 My son, if you will receive my words
    And treasure my commandments within you,
  2 Make your ear attentive to wisdom,
    Incline your heart to understanding;
  3 For if you cry for discernment,
    Lift your voice for understanding;
  4 If you seek her as silver
    And search for her as for hidden treasures;
  5 Then you will discern the fear of the LORD
    And discover the knowledge of God.
  6 For the LORD gives wisdom;
    From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
  7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
    He is a shield to those who walk in integrity

Proverbs 16:20 He who gives attention to the word will find good,
      And blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.
