Great is Thy Faithfulness

“Great is Thy Faithfulness” was written as a poem by Thomas Chisholm in 1923. Chisholm was a schoolteacher, pastor and editor of newspapers and religious literature. He sent the text to William Runyan, who was an editor at Hope Publishing Company and a musician associated with the Moody Bible Institute. Runyan saw the great promise of the hymn, and sought to create music that was fitting and appropriately beautiful. Runyan published the completed version, and it received wide distribution by being a favorite at Moody as well as through its use at the Billy Graham Crusades.

The hymn describes the unchanging faithfulness of God in every season of our lives, as he provides for us through his loving kindness. Verse one describes his never-changing character, and verse two the nature of that character in every season. Verse three describes the experience of that character in the life of believer. Great is his faithfulness toward us!

Great is Thy Faithfulness

[Partial Text]
Verse 1
Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not;
As Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be.

Chorus
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
