Resources on Suffering

This past Sunday, in preaching his message, “Don’t Waste Your Suffering,” Jon Smith quoted from a couple of books we wanted to recommend.

The first, John Piper’s The Hidden Smile of God, details perseverance in the midst of suffering as displayed in the lives of John Bunyan, William Cowper and David Brainerd. As Jon says, “You will discover three people who suffered much but endured with their faith intact.  If you want to be provoked and inspired to not waste your suffering this book is recommended.”

Jon also highly recommends Suffering and the Sovereignty of God, edited by John Piper and Justin Taylor. John Piper and other contributors approach this topic from many angles but are united together in their theology of God’s sovereignty over suffering. They comprise an excellent volume that answers some of the most difficult questions that suffering can present.

Both books are in the Covenant Life bookstore.
