Assistant Technical Director

Location: Covenant Life Church (Gaithersburg, MD)
Church Size: 2300+ members
Classification: Part-time, Non-Exempt (20 hours on average per week)
Department: Production
Reports to: Technical Director and Church Administrator

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Assistant Technical Director will be responsible for the oversight, maintenance and operation of audio, video and lighting equipment. He or she will also coordinate production support  at church events, with the help of production volunteers.

REQUIREMENTS

  • A Christian, who has a personal and growing relationship with Jesus.
  • Must be a member of Covenant Life Church or become a member upon employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

College degree or equivalent with experience (professional or volunteer) in audio, video and lighting

Prior experience in the following is helpful:

  • Live audio mixing for church worship settings
  • Aiming and programming theatrical stage lights and intelligent LED lights via a lighting console/software
  • Using church worship software for displaying lyrics and video
  • Video broadcasting, cameras and video systems
  • Leading church production staff and volunteers
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal communication and leadership skills
  • Strong organizational abilities and attention to detail
  • Has the ability to be flexible and demonstrate Christlike demeanor in a live production environment that is subject to spur of the moment changes
  • A willingness to grow in knowledge and master new technology quickly and thoroughly

RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties will include but not be limited to:

General
  • Provide AVL and production support to all church ministries
  • Be the staff technical lead and liaison between pastors, church staff and volunteers
  • Coordinate with staff and volunteers, and participate in event planning meetings
  • Edit, master, archive all audio and video recordings of church events
  • Troubleshoot, fix and/or send out broken AVL equipment for repair
  • Co-oversee the purchase, maintenance, inventory, installation and operations of all AVL equipment
  • Other duties as assigned by the Technical Director
Weekend Services
  • Serve as the staff technical leader, overseeing and troubleshooting all AVL elements for the rehearsals and services
  • Cover open/vacant positions (ie. FOH mixer, lighting operator/designer) as necessary
  • Helps prepare and set the stage with music and production equipment for the band on Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings
  • Lead pre-service production teams (ie. audio, video and lighting) meetings
  • Edit and archive sermon (audio and video) and post online to the church website.
Event Production Support

Provide AVL and production support at events sponsored by church ministries and departments, primarily but not limited to:

Student Life
  • Discovery Land/Children’s Ministry (Sunday mornings)
  • 10:31/Youth Ministry (Wednesday night meetings), annual youth retreat (summer), annual youth musical (spring)
  • Covenant Life School (daytime/evening events)
  • Family Schools Program (evening events)
Special Events
  • Christmas Eve services
  • Good Friday/Easter services
  • Conferences, members meetings, staff meetings and trainings, etc.

Communications Specialist

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Communications Specialist plays a primary role in developing and implementing communication strategies to advance the vision and mission of Covenant Life Church. Duties include gathering, organizing, writing, editing, designing and managing content to engage internal and external audiences via digital and traditional media channels. The position collaborates closely with the Sunday Core Team, Lead and Executive Pastors, and Creative Director and applies a service-oriented approach in meeting departmental requests.

KEY ASSIGNMENTS

  • Write, edit, proof-read, format and distribute content for internal and external audiences. Vehicles include documents, website, social media, email campaigns and printed pieces
  • Make an ongoing contribution to communications strategy and decision-making. Consult with leaders and other staff on communications alignment and appropriate sequencing.
  • Manage processes and relationships to maintain and continuously improve communication. Maintain weekly content planning documents (Google Sheets).
  • Participate on the teams that plan and administrate Sunday services.
  • Coordinate with the Creative Director and external designers to produce artwork for all communication vehicles as needed. Contribute to graphic design needs.
  • Coordinate with administrative assistants and volunteers as needed.
Sundays
  • Create slides for projection.
  • Prepare sermon slides (ProPresenter)
Website
  • Manage content in ExpressionEngine.
  • Manage relationship with web development partner.
  • Troubleshoot outages, bugs, user issues.
  • Manage content for mobile app.
Social Media
  • Manage content for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Vimeo accounts
  • Strategize and collaborate with with Sunday team, Creative Director and others.
  • Write and/or edit content. Create and follow weekly content calendar.
  • Design artwork as needed and/or coordinate with external designers.
Email Campaigns
  • Implement two branded, church-wide email campaigns on a weekly basis.
  • Implement departmental email campaigns on a monthly or quarterly basis.
Print
  • Coordinate design work for printed pieces.
  • Translate departmental and executive requests into clear requirements for designers.
  • Write and edit content.
  • Design or format Sunday handouts on an occasional basis.
Video
  • Support the Creative Director and volunteers on video and photography shoots (camera, audio, interviewer, other crew roles)
  • Video editing

PROFICIENCIES

  • A Bachelor's degree in marketing, journalism, communications, public relations, English or related area is preferred.
  • Three or more years experience in an institutional setting building a dynamic online and social media presence
  • Excellent writing and editing skills; knowledge of AP Style
  • Strong artistic sense and attention to detail
  • The ability to manage multiple projects and work independently using project management tools such as Basecamp and Asana
  • Training and experience in graphic design is a plus
  • Training and experience in photography and videography including video editing
  • Proficient in Photoshop and InDesign, Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere, basic HTML, Microsoft Office and Google Apps
  • Knowledge of existing and emerging digital media best practices
  • Experience in monitoring, interpreting and presenting analytics
  • Experience as a team player
