Serve Our Church
Serve Our City & World
If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will be my servant also (John 12:26).
As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another (1 Peter 4:10).
Poetry is an important and ubiquitous mode of communication. In most cultures, it is a greatly studied and revered artistic type of expression. It is no coincidence that the national stories of ancient Greece and Rome, the journeys of Dante and the masterpieces of Shakespeare are captured in this elevated form. Wisdom literature, is similarly demanding of language, using word pictures to describe every day life. Part of the greatness of these forms derives from their complexity. Highly stylized structures and grammatical schemes, as well as abundant usage of imagery and symbolism, add multiple layers of meaning beyond just plain text. There are three lessons in this Hebrew Wisdom and Poetry unit. Our primary instructors are David Jackman (retired President of the Proclamation Trust in London, England) and Doug O’Donnell (Senior Pastor of New Covenant Church in Naperville, Illinois).

In this second lesson, David Jackman explores how Old Testament wisdom literature works.
In this third lesson, Doug O’Donnell (Senior Pastor of New Covenant Church in Naperville, Illinois) demonstrates the tools one needs to interpret Old Testament wisdom literature.
