Sunday Classes – Spring 2023

Sunday Classes will help us go deeper into theology, cultural issues, and practical Christian living.

All around us, cultural pressure is increasing and theological literacy is declining. There is increasing confusion and dysfunction. As a result, we believe that an hour of worship and preaching is no longer enough to fully equip the church for its calling in this age. Sunday Classes will help us go deeper into theology, cultural issues, and practical Christian living.

1. Church History, Part 2 – The 4th through 6th Centuries

Register–Church History

Along with the Bible and theology, there is no better way to strengthen our grasp of truth than to see how it was applied (and misapplied) in the history of the Church. We will cover the 4th through 6th centuries exploring such topics as persecution, heresy and the development of the canon of Scripture.

2. Foundations of Church Life

Register–Foundations

The Christian life is not always easy, but it’s not complicated either. To keep our faith on track, often we need to go back to the basics. In this class we’ll explore the foundations of the Christian life, which are also the foundations of our church. We will cover topics like developing Christian convictions, living in Christian community, and loving our neighbors.

Whether you are just starting out in the faith or need a jumpstart, you will grow as you learn and apply the principles of this class in your life. New church members or people exploring church membership are strongly encouraged to attend. A course manual will be provided.

This class will apply the truths of Scripture to all aspects of marriage: communication, resolving conflict, assessing your strengths and weakness, facing challenges, and working together to learn and grow.

4. Re:Engage the Culture

Register–RE:ENgage

In Part 1 of Re:Engage from fall 2022, we discussed the dominant cultural beliefs around us. In Part 2 we will examine the objections raised about Christianity from our surrounding culture. Part 2 will show that the case against faith is not strong at all. Though many people have sincere questions, and heartfelt objections about our faith, there are rich resources in scripture and the church to answer each person with honesty and empathy.

Starting February 19 there will be two sections of this class that will meet concurrently. In this section, we will use McLaughlin’s Confronting Christianity, with weekly readings prior to class. (Section 2 will be for teens, their parents, and young adults. See class below.)

REGISTER-WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY

Jesus' powerful Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5- 7, can be understood as Jesus teaching his listeners how to live, repent, and thrive in their complicated world. The study will help us examine often familiar parts of Scripture - such as the Beatitudes and laying up our treasures in Heaven - in light of the present kingdom of grace and the promised kingdom of glory, ushered in by Jesus. Back then, Jesus' listeners encountered a focused, intentional, and accessible teacher who deeply cared about them. So it is today for current students of this wonderful sermon.
