Week of Prayer: The Great Commission

April 28 to May 2, 2025

The Great Commission

Matthew 28:18-20

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Teaching

“...teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you..."

Friday, May 2, 2025

Disciples are followers but not tag-alongs. They follow to learn, change, and grow. They are students of Jesus. His commands teach us who to trust, what to believe, and how to live. And one of his commands, in fact, is that we teach other disciples to learn, love, and live the very things he has commanded us.

Prayer Points for Today:

  • Pray that we would all learn, love, and live the commands of Christ.
  • Ask God to help us individually and collectively mature into the image of Christ.
  • Seek God for opportunities to teach others what you have learned from the Lord.
  • Pray that we would be doers of the word and not hearers only.
  • Ask the Father to help our elders guard the gospel by watching the teaching of the church closely.

Baptizing

"...baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…”

Thursday, May 1, 2025

The great commision has been described as the task of finding, folding, and forming disciples. "Folding" occurs when a new disciple is baptized into Christ's death and resurrection, which is also his or her entrance into the church of Jesus Christ.

Prayer Points for Today:

  • Ask God to turn our church's gospel opportunities into eternal salvation by causing the seed of the gospel to grow in people who do not now believe in Christ.
  • Pray also for sincere faith and real repentance that leads to a transformed life.
  • "A decision that does not result in a disciple is a deception." Pray that the people with whom we share the gospel will decide to follow Christ but also become true disciples.
  • Pray that new believers everywhere will be eager to obey Christ by being baptized and fully participating in his church.

All Nations

"...make disciples of all nations..."

Wednesday, April 30, 2025

Just as all authority on earth belongs to Jesus, the mission of his church is to extend his good kingdom to all nations and peoples. Until Jesus returns to judge the world, the church has the unique honor and sole responsibility to be ambassadors of Christ both near and far.

Prayer Points for Today:

  • Magnify the Lord for the beauty of his command to go to all nations, that his gospel crosses borders, languages, and cultures.
  • Ask God to strengthen us with faithfulness to pray for, participate with, and give to our global mission partners (listed below).
  • Pray for powerful gospel transformation through the witness and work of our global mission partners.
  • Ask God to send missionaries to people groups who have never heard the name of Christ.
  • Pray that God would lead more of our own church members to go to the nations.

GLOBAL MISSION PARNTERS

Go Therefore

"Go therefore and make disciples..."

Tuesday, April 30, 2025

The reigning king Jesus has a mission for his church: go and make disciples. “Go” is a call to each of us for action and motion, leaving the familiar and comfortable so that the Spirit can use us to shape others into followers of Christ.

Prayer Points for Today:

  • Ask God to work deeply in our hearts so that we value what he values and love our neighbors as he “so loved the world” (John 3:16).
  • Pray that each of us would personally embrace the Great Commission, discerning the part we have to play and going to the specific neighbors, friends, coworkers, and relatives.
  • Thank God for his indwelling Spirit, and ask the Spirit to give us passion for service, open doors for gospel outreach, and courage to go through those doors.
  • Ask God to strengthen us, individually and as a church, to faithfully pray for, participate with, and give to our local mission partners (listed below) and other local ministries.
  • Pray that God would multiply our efforts dramatically, accomplishing more than we can ask or imagine by his power working through us (Ephesians 3:20).

All Authority

"All Authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me."

Monday, April 28, 2025

The Father has established Christ as king over all creation, over all of heaven and all of earth, over all nations and all people, and over his church. From his position of authority and power, and to the end of his rightful glory, he calls his church to action.

Prayer Points for Today:

  • Declare the glory and goodness of God's authority.
  • Pray that those of us in Covenant Life Church will live joyfully submitted to the authority of the Lord.
  • Pray that faith in the Lord, not fear of opposition, would motivate us to fulfill our call in the community.
  • Pray that the authority of Christ would lead to his will being done on earth as it is in heaven.
  • Pray that our neighbors would joyfully submit to Christ by receiving his gracious forgiveness and lordship through faith.

A Week of Prayer for the Great Commission

April 28 to May 2, 2025

When Jesus appeared to the disciples after his resurrection, he gave them a purpose and a promise in the Great Commission.

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” – Matthew 28:18-20

Today we enjoy the ongoing presence of Christ in our lives, just as he promised. And we are called to pursue this ongoing purpose: make disciples.

The Spring Week of Prayer will focus on this central call of God for our church. Each day, we will post prayer points on the church website and remind you to pray via text message. Each day will focus on different aspects of the Great Commission:

  • Monday – “All Authority” – From Jesus’ position of rule and authority, he calls his church to action.

  • Tuesday – “Go Therefore” – Each of us has a “place” to go so that the Spirit can use us to call others to follow Christ.

  • Wednesday – “All Nations” – The church has the unique honor and sole responsibility to be ambassadors of Christ both near and far.

  • Thursday – “Baptizing” – The church’s call to make disciples must and will lead to the spiritual transformation of dead souls into living sacrifices to God.

  • Friday – “Teaching” – The church’s call to make disciples means we will teach others to learn, love, and live the commands of Jesus.

Finally, on Friday night at 7pm in the Edwards Room, we will conclude the Week of Prayer with a Worship and Prayer night focused on “I Am With You Always.” We will recount, rejoice in, and pray for the powerful nearness of God in our hearts, in our relationships, and in our testimony about Jesus to the world.

The Great Commission is truly so great that we cannot do it on our own. Please join us next week in praying that the risen Christ will empower us by his Spirit to be faithful to his call on our church and that lives will be transformed as a result.
