The Great Commission
April 28-May 2, 2025
When Jesus appeared to the disciples after his resurrection, he gave them a purpose and a promise in the Great Commission.
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” – Matthew 28:18-20
Today we enjoy the ongoing presence of Christ in our lives, just as he promised. And we are called to pursue this ongoing purpose: make disciples.
The Spring Week of Prayer will focus on this central call of God for our church. Each day, we will post prayer points on the church website and remind you to pray via text message. Each day will focus on different aspects of the Great Commission:
-
Monday – “All Authority” – From Jesus’ position of rule and authority, he calls his church to action.
-
Tuesday – “Go Therefore” – Each of us has a “place” to go so that the Spirit can use us to call others to follow Christ.
-
Wednesday – “All Nations” – The church has the unique honor and sole responsibility to be ambassadors of Christ both near and far.
-
Thursday – “Baptizing” – The church’s call to make disciples must and will lead to the spiritual transformation of dead souls into living sacrifices to God.
-
Friday – “Teaching” – The church’s call to make disciples means we will teach others to learn, love, and live the commands of Jesus.
Finally, on Friday night at 7pm in the Edwards Room, we will conclude the Week of Prayer with a Worship and Prayer night focused on “I Am With You Always.” We will recount, rejoice in, and pray for the powerful nearness of God in our hearts, in our relationships, and in our testimony about Jesus to the world.
The Great Commission is truly so great that we cannot do it on our own. Please join us next week in praying that the risen Christ will empower us by his Spirit to be faithful to his call on our church and that lives will be transformed as a result.
