Week of Prayer

October 26-31

Your kingdom come, your will be done. – Matthew 6:10

As we journey through the book of Daniel this fall, we cling to one core truth: Our God Reigns. He has not slipped from his throne. 2020 has not caught him by surprise. He rules over all things at all times for his glory and the good of his people, despite what circumstances might lead us to believe.

Yet, even though he reigns, each of us is continually faced with questions of allegiance, with our time, money, priorities, relationships. Will we submit to his reign or resist it? Will we be a part of making his kingdom known on earth or will we hide it? The story of Daniel is the story of real people facing those questions in real time. Some submit to God’s reign and experience his blessing. Some resist it and are humbled.

Each day presents opportunities to demonstrate allegiance to Christ or to ourselves. It is no wonder, then, that Jesus teaches us to pray, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed by your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

This week, we will come before the throne of God each day and ask that he would reign in and through our lives. Use the Scriptures and prayer points below to help inform your prayers each day, inviting God to extend his good rule and reign in your heart and to the ends of the earth.

God, Reign in Our World.

Saturday, October 31

Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples! For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods. – Psalm 96:3-4

Prayer Points:

  • Pray for our mission partners who are working to spread the gospel among the unreached across the globe:

    • Seita & Emma in Japan

    • Phil & Sara in China

    • Paul & Donna in Nepal

    • Robby in Southeast Asia

  • Pray for the persecuted church around the world. Ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen persecuted believers by reminding them how much God loves them, filling them with his hope, and enabling them to share the gospel without fear. Pray that God will protect his persecuted children and provide them with Bibles, jobs, safe places to live, and fellowship with other believers.

God, Reign in Our Nation.

Friday, October 30

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. – 1 Timothy 2:1-4

Prayer Points:

  • Pray for our upcoming national election: for the voting process itself, for the candidates on the ballot, and for wisdom for voters.

  • Pray for a peaceful continuance or transfer of power.

  • Pray for our federal, state, and local leaders by name.

  • Ask God to help you and other Christians to please God by being “godly and dignified in every way” through this election season.

  • Pray for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit through the proclamation of that gospel that would lead many to “be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.”

God, Reign in Our Community.

Thursday, October 29

Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation. – 1 Peter 2:11-12

Prayer Points:

  • Are there any “passions of the flesh” hindering your witness in the community? Ask God to help you see any ways you can “keep your conduct honorable” for the sake of God’s reputation among our neighbors.

  • Pray for your immediate neighbors by name.

  • Pray for the “good deeds” of people you know who are working for the good of our community, for example teachers, coaches, first responders, etc.

  • Pray for community outreach ministries working in and out of Covenant Life, like Good Samaritan Advocates and ESOL at South Lake Elementary.

  • Prayerfully consider people you know that embody this verse, and plan a small way to encourage them today.

God, Reign in Our Church.

Wednesday, October 28

And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. – Ephesians 4:11-16

Prayer Points:

  • Pray that our church would be a place where people: 1) speak the truth in love; 2) grow in Christ; and 3) do the part God has called them to do.

  • Pray that, in tumultuous times, we would not be “tossed to and fro” but instead grow in Christ and be built up in love.

  • Pray for your leaders — small group leaders, ministry team leaders, elders and others — that God would use them to equip the church for ministry.

  • Are you currently playing whatever part God has called you to in his church? Prayerfully consider that question and plan to take whatever next steps you need to begin to pursue that calling.

God, Reign in My Relationships.

Tuesday, October 27

For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another… But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. – Galatians 5:14–15, 22-24

Prayer Points:

  • Pray for the people in your life who tempt you. Are there people you have avoided because you disagree with them? Pray for them.

  • Think about the moments when you are most tempted to lash out or harbor bitterness. Ask God to meet you and help you in those moments today.

  • Pray for fresh filling of the Holy Spirit in order to bear the fruit of the Spirit.

  • Consider ways you could proactively encourage people around you today.

God, Reign in My Heart.

Monday, October 26

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! … Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. – Psalm 51:1–2, 10-12

Prayer Points:

  • Acknowledge to God any areas of unconfessed sin in your life.

  • Thank God for the forgiveness that is yours through the work of Christ in your place.

  • Ask God to renew you by the Holy Spirit and strengthen you to pursue Christlikeness.

  • Commit to take action in pursuit of holiness and righteousness.
